This might seem callous but, the dude had a terminal illness and picked his own way to go. I'd rather the painless and instant shotgun blast to the face over the very painful and drawn out terminal cancer. Leaving a huge mess to clean up yeah isn't ideal. And he probably didn't tell his family or give them a chance to say goodbye or whatever so maybe his method was flawed but I can understand his intention.
