In many people's view, he's cheapened the park experience while raising prices and made a bunch of dumb decisions unrelated to Covid. People aren't mad because he said something lovely. People are mad because he's a feckless coward who's done the right thing but far too late. He/Disney made a halfassed attempt to condemn DeSantis's homophobe legislation well after it had been passed. Then Pixar and other subsidiaries started insulting Disney for not doing enough. Then Chapek claimed he'd called Desantis and had planned for Disney execs to have a full in-person conference with him. DeSantis then made him look like a loving clown by coming out and saying Chapek called and groveled but no meeting had ever been scheduled. Then word got out that Disney had donated to every single supporter of the anti-gay bill (because they donate to pretty much everyone in FL government to keep them happy), and Disney announced they were pulling ALL donations, even to liberals, which pissed people off more. Last week they released a more sternly worded statement against the legislation, but Desantis knows he's got Chapek by the balls so he signed it into law and started publicly dunking on Disney. Sorry for the wall of text. It's a pretty funny slapfight but Disney is clearly on the right side despite being weak and lame about it, which is pretty much the story of IRL fascists vs. preogressives in America.
