I caught these suspicious fellows out in the yard. https://imgur.com/Mz1okUM.mp4 I count them all in case of raccoon incursion. We lost one due to the great icening of 2022 but it went to a better place. You might say this is an unfair critter quest but if it rains hard enough they have the option to egress.

Is that yellow stuff its pollen load? If so, why is it so smooth and shiny looking?
|
# ? Mar 26, 2022 03:22 |
I think it's because when bees intentionally collect pollen they will form and sculpt the pollen onto that spot and compact it down so they can carry more

It's very pretty, what region is that from? I've never seen a green bee before. We just get bumble and honey bees.

Is that an orchid bee? They’re dope as hell I can’t tell if the HUGE CALVES are from the pollen or part of the bee's legs

If it's green and shiny and packing pollen like that it's probably an orchid bee, yeah. Only the males have the enormous chunky thighs. This one is female, as only they gather pollen.Neurion posted:I think it's because when bees intentionally collect pollen they will form and sculpt the pollen onto that spot and compact it down so they can carry more This. To add: they wet it using spit. Treecko posted:It's very pretty, what region is that from? I've never seen a green bee before. We just get bumble and honey bees. Oh there's definitely other bees about! Not all of them are big and fuzzy like the ones you mentioned. The vast majority of species are quite small. Take a close look at any field of flowers and you're guaranteed to find dozens. Mak0rz fucked around with this message at 05:59 on Mar 26, 2022 |

It’s an invasive orchid bee, though as far as invasive species go, these guys are pretty harmless. The way they fly is super distinct too, with short, fast sprints to a new location that they hold for a split second before moving to a new location. I got a horrible potato video that doesn’t fully capture it. Just before this he/she had been scoping me out, making sure I wasn’t going to disturb her house I guess. https://youtu.be/CNyUGtJnNKo

Today's visitor was a hawk! In north GA. I'm not sure what kind, but we have a family of them that nest here each year and I often get to see the young ones swooping (and failing to catch anything).

I would guess red-shouldered.

^Thanks, hawks are one thing I'm really bad at IDing because we have both red shouldered and red tailed here and iirc the juvenile red tailed also don't have red tails yet? RIP Easy one today though, eastern bluebird.

I heard the burbling call of Western Kingbirds at school today. Didn't see them, but a family has been nesting in the same tree across campus for at least 41 years (I've been here for 31, but our resident bird expert was here 10 years before that). Our neotropical migrants have returned once again. Now I'm just waiting for the Black-headed Grosbeaks.

Sorbus posted:The deers somehow know when I am without my camera and decide to show up Yo buddy, no worries, I got you Browns Park NWR in NW Colorado last week. The mule deer are so safe and habituated to vehicles moving about that they behave a lot like rangeland cows, it's very weird to see in such a remote area. Here's my recreation of the Abbey Road album cover: Saw some elk too, but they were a little too far away to get a good snap of.

I remember camping somewhere either central or northern California where the mule deer knew what a potato chip bag opening sounded like and would come trotting over. I also remember them being HUGE compared to the whitetails out here, but I was a kid so that could have been a matter of perspective.

Leafhoppers are closely related to cicadas and basically look like minatire versions of them (plus some extra colors and accessories).
