I like the pistol sound. I’ve heard way wimpier sounding pistols from modern games.

the chaingun feels more fun to use when i edited it to use the shotgun sound like the chaingunner does, instead of the dinky regular one

Here's a fun forums game, and it's relevant! Quick: name the worst sounding gun in a commercially released FPS. I'll start! ROTT's MP40. Goddamn thing sounds like you're tap dancing on a yoga mat. Edit: sort of related, but I STILL have zero idea what the Doom Imp idle sound is. Rupert Buttermilk fucked around with this message at 22:16 on Mar 31, 2022 |

The Doom pistol and chaingun sounds pretty bad. It's like tapping on a metal trash can. edit: or maybe throwing a coin at a tarp

In the end I didn't refund Nightmare Reaper. It's fine, fun to play short bursts every day. It could be improved in several ways, but well, it is what it is. For example, as cool is to find a level 1 weapon with great random perks and save it at the end of every level, I think ultimately is making the game worse, not better. It's hampering the strong point of the game, the great weapon variety and with random perks, because you start using 'the chosen weapon' over the others way too much. You should save the same weapon a max of 3-4 levels, that would be a good compromise. Also:

Chaser is in this weird category where I love the actual firing sounds for nearly every weapon, but the engine has a stodgy limitation where gunfire can't overlap on itself and so automatic weapons loop in a glitchy, chopped-up way. Like on this Mac-10, where during single shots and on the trailing ends of bursts you can hear texture and detail in the report but during the meat of the bursts it sounds like a cheap school PA system stuck in a feedback loop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JN5Sap9sKPs&t=40s

Halo 2 SMG and Halo 3 assault rifle are both terribly wimpy sounding, especially when you compare them to the Halo 1 assault rifle which is loud as hell and has that Aliens-esque reverb on it.

The Half-life 2 SMG is what made me realize that weapon feel can make a weapon feel weaker than it is. For that matter, the Combine Pulse Rifle was the opposite where it's a decent gun already but the feel makes it seem even more powerful.

The CMP150s from Perfect Dark sounded almost like a bunch of seeds being spit out from your guns but goddamn is that gun smoooooooth. Also, a kid my sister used to babysit would play Perfect Dark with us, and he'd call those guns 'composies". I've been using that made up name for them ever since, and I barely remembered what they were actually called.

So once again, I am asking you, devs, please, let me turn off weapon slots on the scroll wheel unless you have a button the queues up some weapon I designate. I do not need to scroll between 5 plus weapon, I need to switch between my primary gun and whatever my "special operations" gun is and scrolling through five things to find it is not helpful. Nightmare Reaper, please, I've been using the same shotgun for the last 10 hours of the game just give me anything that is remotely in the same universe of utility.

For looter shooters that randomly generate weapons and effects, I think that weapons and their upgrades should have a hidden 'general score' in the background. Shotgun? 5 points. Explosive ammo? That's an extra 10 points. But you as the player don't know or see your weapon score ever. Then, the random weapon generator should be strictly based on your current (or last, if you're unarmed) weapon score. That way, when you're running around with a weapon that's scored at like, say, 46, you'll soon only be finding weapons that are maybe +/- 2 points.
