I do think they are setting up the roots of Khan, but I think it's also the writers wanting to push the timeline of the Eugenics Wars back a little bit since "they started in 1999!" has been a joke for 23 years

It would be the one retcon I wouldn't really mind and it can always be handwaved with "the records were lovely". The fact that they dropped in a line about him testing poo poo on soldiers is really what got me thinking about it.

I don't expect Khan himself to show up, but I wouldn't be surprised if they're laying the groundwork for a Khan series to be set a few decades into the future of the events of Picard's 2024.

Delsaber posted:

The impression I got from Soong's hearing was that the Eugenics Wars already happened and that's why his funding was getting pulled via whatever treaty or accord they mentioned. But that could be totally off, since as Picard said later, records from this century are "chaos", so a lot of the details between major landmark events are fuzzy.

That's also the only way WW3 supposedly lasting decades (according to Memory Alpha, anyway) makes any sense to me: post-war United Earth and Federation historians trying to piece together lovely records from 20-30 years of vaguely related conflicts and rolling them all together. It's hard to imagine a world war fought by conventional means lasting that long before someone gets jumpy enough to launch the nukes, but maybe I've just had my brain poisoned by Fallout games and clancychat

Going by their analysis of the atmosphere and it not having high levels of radiation yet, I took it to mean that WW3 hadn't happened yet because I thought the Earth would need to get nuked in there someplace. But again my Star Trek lore gets real fuzzy real fast and I'm not going to rewatch the beginning of Episode 3 to get the actual quote because this show doesn't deserve that level of scrutiny.

eh wot? the two meme men people joke about and goof on for decades in peak trek? the guy with his tits out that makes kirk so horny he screams to the heavens in lust, this is peak trek?

Wrath of Khan is the absolute best film in the entire franchise by miles and the only one that comes close is Voyage Home. I don't want to belabor it, but Kirk screaming to the heavens isn't because he's horny, but because he knows how to play to Khan's ego. It was all to make Khan think he had won to buy them time. The characterization in that film is exceptionally well-done; the stakes are high while being personal, and it asks real questions about the nature of man and his place in the universe. I have to assume you've seen it though and know all of that, but if you haven't and you're just going by the memes, you owe it to yourself to actually watch it.

Orbital defensive systems eliminate ICBMs as a viable threat, airborne lasers on alert eliminate SLBMs, and hypersonic smart drones eliminate strategic bombers. Standard theater defense systems are sophisticated enough to eliminate tactical systems wholesale. Non-nuclear systems successfully destroy ICBMs in counterforce strikes, perhaps kinetic bombardments, and the lead time to build new ones precludes redeploying such systems. Hunter-killer submarines eliminate ballistic missile subs in the opening minutes of the war and the resources are better spent elsewhere. Strategic bombers are pressed into service supporting conventional airstrikes.

That's why the only nuclear weapons that turn up on screen in WWIII are tactical drops from fighter-bombers.

They've said that the time travel was supopsed to occur at the end of episode 2 but they moved it to 3.

Rescuing Rios felt like it was supposed to be the end of episode 4, but happened here.

The episodes aren't exactly over-time so I wonder why they keep doing that. Makes the pacing feel really weird in that everything is a cliffhanger.

The Phoenix was a nuclear missile of some kind. Someone was making them, even if that specific missile didn't end up getting launched.

I doubt we're done with Teresa just yet. If anything ends up mattering from that Rios subplot it'll probably be her.

Weirdly enough, her clinic's logo was on the medical supplies those random space goons were trying to steal from the real La Sirena in the season premiere. :tinfoil:

Also curious what everyone thinks the chronology for him is, if that even applies to him. I.E., is the gray-haired Q we're seeing in the past from a moment in his life before he talked to Old Man Picard, or before? The hair and his general demeanor would make it seem like it was before he met with Picard, but that's confusing because 2024 Q doesn't have his powers anymore, and he still had some remnant of them in the present.

So, why does the Supervisor look like a Romulan woman from the future?

In a better show, there'd be a point to that. She doesn't seem to be able to read minds or anything like that and had no idea who Picard was, so it's not like she pulled the features from some alien records.

And her people don't do time travel, so I can't see it being the Supervisor in the future timeline, watching over doddering Picard in his retirement.

Yeah, straight up evil asswipe Q ain't really doing it for me either. But apparently DeLancie had been angling to get the chance to play a more overtly antagonistic Q for a while after they kind of went too far into goofy nonsense Q by the end of Voyager, so if this is satisfying some longing for him as an actor, then I'm okay with it. But yeah, I also hope we get goofball "leaves a voice message comically telling you to get hosed if you call his hotline" Q back by the time we're done here.

I liked Renée Picard's simulator showing a 1202 error, because that was the spurious error that Neil and Buzz had to deal with during the Apollo 11 landing. Also the lady doing the computer voice on the El La Sirena was doing a pretty good Majel impression and fooled me. Also also the shot of the ICE bus getting EMP'ed may have been flipped, because it was on the wrong side of the road. Spiner looked and sounded good and his scenes with Q were decent.

That episode felt like it was constructed better than the others, which was nice, even if most of the stuff with the Borg Queen was still kind of dumb. "I hated killing her." Yeah, we figured, Agnes, by how you're clearly crying and shaking.

It would not surprise me if Q has access to a gently caress lot of resources that have nothing to do with using his powers because he strikes me as that kind of controlled chaos type guy.
