It’s pretty incredible to see what happens to someone’s mind when a crippling Twitter addiction is combined with the egotism of the influence it affords you when you’ve got a large following . You get the impression that Linehan, of everything he’s pissed away in his life, it’s his Twitter account he misses the most, as his whole life came to revolve around it. But basically all that happened was he reaped the benefits of being one of the people Twitter suggests you follow when you first create an account, right? It was him, Stephen Fry, Charlie Brooker etc as famous Twitter uses back when the idea of interacting with famous people on the internet was something of a novelty. And everything just snowballed from there…

tbh I was concerned that they wouldn't be able to write a conversion therapy ban that included trans people that wasn't so shoddily worded that it risked banning affirmation therapies (or had a further chilling effect)

TACD posted:Well yea but you’re probably also buying booze and kitchen roll and petrol and whatever as well. I agree the value proposition is less attractive if you’re only buying toilet roll lol I've always thought of CostCo as being like "bargain" stores. I went to a "Dollarama" here in Canada yesterday for the first time in a while. They sell stuff cheap (not for a dollar, amusingly - everything is $1.25 - equivalent to about 71p). You can make genuinely quite good savings on some stuff. I normally shop at Food Basics which is the cheapest supermarket in my area by quite a bit, and even then you can save on stuff. They have a limited food selection but you can get canned beans and other stuff that are like, good, healthy staples cheaper than you'd be able to at the supermarket, BUT other stuff is like, hilariously expensive. They sell instant noodles there, also for $1.25, when I know for a fact that identical noodles available in the Food Basics supermarket, literally next door, for 59 cents. The psychology (and the marketing) around such places, as well as CostCo, is that it's "special" and "you save money there" so people go there with that in their heads. "All the things here are bargains" where in reality there's actually a fairly small subset of things which are. Much of the rest of the stuff in the store is either roughly at parity with a regular supermarket, or actually works out as more expensive. I'm not saying you can't save money by shopping there, but you have to have your wits about you.

Ahh the old days. In other news, has anyone had any experience with ME/CFS and the NHS? My wife was diagnosed not too long ago and she handed me the symptom leaflet she got and its a huge checklist for everything that is me. I've been looking up ADHD interactions/similarities and dang. Everything about hypersensitivity, lethargy and pain. There's a lot of commonality. I'm just not convinced the NHS will do poo poo over me talking to my ADHD doctors. It seems to be another one like IBS that is "well, you have it... It just needs to be managed, bye!"

I will say if they offer to try you with antidepressants and you're not on them already it's worth giving it a try. It doesn't imply you are inventing the disease but it might help symptoms. I say this because I had a friend who would not even try because she took it as some kind of insult.Fibromyalgia has some doctors taking it seriously now -- see if you can get a referral to a rheumatologist.

As such if what Mebh is doing for their ADHD is helping it's probably not worthwhile changing horses, but if it's not it can't hurt to ask (and vice versa for their partner's CFS). After all it's not like there's a definitive test that can actually say that someone definitely has either CFS or ADHD - all you can do is rule out as many of the other things that could cause those symptoms as you can. It's not impossible they're both on a much wider spectrum of disorders where diagnoses tend towards the things that have at least been given names and diagnostic criteria simply because there's no blood test you can do to say "Aha, they're critically short on attentionite and wakeywakeyic acid!".

And it's low-down in NHS funding priorities because: quote:Well for both there's no cure or even specifically useful treatment, just relief of symptoms and training of coping mechanisms.

I'm 16 years into a CFS/ME diagnosis, and there's absolutely gently caress all available that really helps. Up until recently, they promoted things like Graded Exercise Therapy, which has actually ended up killing people I know. CBT is the other thing they promote. As for medicines, none of the NHS options have had any effect on the pain flare ups, and nothing on the NHS can really regulate and control the sleeping patterns. I've exhausted basically everything bar opiate meds, which I'm leaving as a very last resort. The only medicine that has really helped has been cannabis, which thankfully is legally available if you have a chronic pain diagnosis, evidence of trying at least two conventional treatments, and having enough money to fund a private prescription (which is about the same as buying black market). helps for greatly for my pain, dexterity, mood, appetite, nausea, balance etc But there's nothing that will cure the fatigue, and nothing that will give you energy. You can only ever borrow it from the future, having to repay it with total rest at a huge premium. I'm now at the stage where I'm juggling trying to exist with having 20 mins of housework gently caress me up for weeks (I stopped coping 2 years ago), and I'm only just managing to go out to do my weekly shop in the electric wheelchair, and that's it... My only real advice is you can't fight CFS/ME, as you'll lose. You can only wait, and hope that things will improve, and things do for many...

I wonder if his personality has changed or whether or not he is just a generally self obsessed person who has hitherto channeled it into being a famous tv guy. Much like you can certainly read plenty of rowling's politics in her books. The absolute certainty of one's own correctness manifesting in aggression towards others while claiming to be the victim/reasonable one seems to be a very common thread in GC types which I think is why it's so endemic in the media class. So much so that I think the transphobia is more of an expression of that personality type than it is the origination point of the hostility. Ironically enough, I think Glinner is woke, in one of the original pejorative definitions. Like the Louis Farrakhan school of Black Islam where you start off pretty progressive on race and class and community issues, but through quite a narrow, rigid, and self promoting framework, so then when sometime later some group calls you out on your views on women or something rather than introspect at all you double down on it all being society that's wrong and before long you start ranting about Jewish gay hormones.

The funniest thing about the Linehan arc is how even the people’s he’s desperate for adulation and recognition from seem to have gotten sick of him. And in the case of Rowling, either ignore him altogether or isn’t aware of his existence, much to his clear disappointment. So now all he’s got left is courting the attention of the alt-right ghouls he originally gained so much liberal-Twitter clout in criticising.

Also I think why it is often comorbid with "I was cool in the 90's" style progressivisim where you weren't actually that clever or interested but you were vaguely aware that saying "I would actually not spit on a gay person if I saw them in the street" was the height of counterculture and now society has moved on and you're just a sad old liberal with a spent creative output and even your pile of money can't make you feel cool again, and for some reason you can't just buy a porsche and crash it like a normal person.
