Agreed. Hands down the best zombie movie ever made. Also the genesis for “fast” zombies

Cronenberg's Rabid had fast rage zombies in 1977 but that film is practically forgotten so I doubt it had much influence. Similarly the Italian schlock film Nightmare City had running zombies, that could also operate vehicles and use weapons, in 1980 but it was similarly underseen. Return is probably the first big iconic film that people actually remember to feature running zombies. However Return is 100% the origin of zombies eating brains. No one did it before and very few have done it since. Surprisingly few films despite how ingrained in pop culture the idea of brains as the staple of the undead diet. Which just goes to show how hugely influential Return of the Living Dead is. It did almost as much to shape the modern conception of zombies as the original Night of the Living Dead. That's all very true, but I'd also like to add that Rabid is really just horny zombies, which is a trend that thankfully didn't catch on. Aside from Tina Belcher.

That's Shivers AKA The Parasite Murders AKA They Came From Within AKA Orgy of the Blood Parasites from '75. Rabid is where a lady has a skin transplant that turns her into a horny vampire with a stinger in her armpit that turns anyone she drinks blood from into a really angry rabies guy that eventually turn Montréal into a post-apocalyptic ruin. Shivers is the one where a parasitic slug crawls into people's mouths in a luxury tower block and turns them into sex perverts to spread itself better. If I had a nickel for every time Cronenberg made movies about sex spreading a zombie virus in the 70s I'd have two nickels but it's weird that it happened twice.

Yeah, ROTD is kind of a clever movie. I like how they manage to make it a sequel to NOTLD but also NOTLD was still a movie in the universe of this movie, so everyone's like "holy poo poo it's like that zombie movie!"

Cronenberg wanted Sissy Spacek for the role but the studio thought she was too American and her accent would be distracting. Then while Rabid was being made Carrie became a massive hit. Imagine if he'd gotten her to star then the weird vampire stinger sex zombie film probably would've been a big hit and not end up a footnote in Cronenberg's career.

It also has the most horrifying premise. The real problem isn't that there are a bunch of zombies coming to kill you, but that it's going to hurt the whole time you're dead.

Tangentially related, it really annoys me how in The Walking Dead comics they are allowed to say "zombie" but in the show such words and concepts have never before existed apparently.

You’re not allowed to say the Z word, it’s discriminatory. They prefer to be called "differently alive".

Soul Dentist posted:Considering the word came from real life religious practice of vodou I think it's a reasonable leap It's only a zombie if it's a reanimated corpse brought back to perform labourous physical tasks via magic. Otherwise it's just shambling undead.

Soul Dentist posted:Considering the word came from real life religious practice of vodou I think it's a reasonable leap Sure am glad that in so many zombie apocalypses everyone's sensitive enough about appropriation that they won't even do it off-hand. Good thing we avoided any issues with using a term for the risen dead by pretending nobody in-setting has ever heard of the most relevant word for them. I don't think there's any merit in protecting a term for undead slaves as if that's better for Vodou practitioners or something.
