Was SNL always bad? All I know about it is that it's been painfully unfunny and that the muppets used to work on it for a little while.

It has always been bad and used to be better. In the 90s it was bad and used to be better.

It is funnier at midnight than in the middle of the day though. When I used to watch it there was a channel that would rerun it at 4 in the afternoon and it was absolutely dire, but at midnight it was pretty funny. So watch it when you are tipsy and sleep deprived for the best experience.

that's not nature's way
SNL is definitely way more misses than hits, but every episode usually has something worth checking out. And Weekend Update is consistently pretty solid, with the best bits being Che and Jost giving each other jokes to tell sight-unseen a few times a year.

This is from just two weeks ago and I think has gained a place as one of my all-time favorite SNL sketches.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Wvhet4Yl-Y

Also keep in mind if you take out the musical guest, the monologue, and Weekend Update SNL puts out about 42 minutes of sketches per episode with around 20 episodes per season. Most other sketch shows are 22-30 minutes depending on if they have commercials with much lower episode counts.

SNL goes through cycles of good/bad writers and actors. Sometimes both line up and it's mostly great for a year or two. A competent host can't save bad sketches, but they can make already-good writing that much more memorable. I do think the Lonely Island era that opened the door for pre-recorded sketches was a bit of a renaissance, but there's truth to the idea that nostalgia is a factor - I think aside from TLI, the cast was at a low point around then.

Whoever said that all sketch comedy shows are mostly misses, is crazy.

SNL can eat a bag of poo poo until they take the estro-maxx skit off their site and YouTube channel

Then they can continue eating poo poo because they're funny by accident and they platform some super lovely people

The joke that SNL was best when you first discovered it at age 8-15 is accurate. It's also just lensing from how sketch comedy is.

Every single sketch comedy show that ever existed, including yes the one you personallyfeel is unassailable, was always far more garbage than gold. Yes even that one which was so important and formative to the art form or whatever-- Monty Python, Kids in the Hall, Fry and Laurie, UCB, WKUK, SNL, In Living Color, Mr. Show, Portlandia, Little Britain, Key and Peele, SCTV, Chapelle's Show, MadTV, Carol Burnett, Mitchell and Webb, etc. Every single one has a huge hit : miss ratio. It's endemic to the form-- having to produce anywhere from 4 to 20 sketches per episode with the same team on a massive, usually coke-fueled turnaround inevitably produces loads and loads of duds, misfires, or just plain dull sketches that don't really do anything wrong but fail to impress on the memory.
