It just occurred to me that these people have basically become like Glenn Beck in the early 10's, where they think that all their political enemies are being manipulated by some obscure political theorist (like Saul Alinsky in Beck's case). The mindset in general seems very similar.

A United States unbound by the limitations of global power politics can still hypothetically be a force for good in the world, because liberal morality is relatively better than "authoritarian" morality. And if America uses its power to do evil (always), then it's our cross to bear by taking on the burden of the world's sins. Hypothetically, you could argue that all of imperialism's eggs being put into one basket means you only have to do a revolution in the imperial core for worldwide revolution to be possible (not communist revolution though, that's authoritarian). But advanced industrialized countries all repressed their leftist political movements, while Russia and China were relatively backwards and riddled with decades of war and strife before their people were ready to embrace communism. Having one big all-powerful capitalist superstate is existential doom for any leftist movement in the world. Then again, anarchists don't have to worry about that because they'll never be powerful enough to actually threaten the world order.

I was first starting to get disillusioned with anarchism as an ideology (at least as practiced in the global north) around the time of the Syrian civil war. I remember thinking anarchists used to organize strike defense brawler gangs and kill robber barons and assassinate heads of state, now all they do is say stuff like ‘well of course war is awful and it’s possible to be against both sides but Assad is authoritarian so we have no choice other than flooding the region with guns and briefcases full of cash’
