Didn’t things like this actually exist at one point, back when floppy drives were still new technology and super expensive?

Don't know about floppies, but it definitely existed with CDs, like 5-8 CD-ROM readers in a tower with a small PC sharing them on a network.

I wonder how much doing it this way would have cost back in 1983. Single-sided 3.5" drives existed, at least.

It's always fun hearing these basic melodies from early games & software in light of what demoscene musicians were able to get out of the same sound chip many decades later. Obsolete for sure but definitely not a failure :unsmith:

And also a more pleasant cover of the original track. I love the SID chip. Such a unique sound.

I think it was a setup or something. Those cylinders shouldn't be that rare, considering that techmoan just did a video about them and he wasn't very delicate with them.

I have absolutely no proof because I don't even know where to start to get old recordings of ZDTV and TechTV and don't care that much. But I remember it, hes still out there, and every time I see him come up I think "chris pirillo I remember what you did you dirty nerd."

True, and techmoan said most of his cylinders were modern repros so there's somebody out there (I think there was a quick ad for it) making cylinders still.

Re: wax cylinders… they’re not really rare at all. I guess maybe that particular one could be, but I just bought 7 of them at an estate sale auction for $28 about a month ago because I thought they would be cool to have. I mean they kind of are in my mind since they were the first popular playback medium as far as I can tell. No I don’t have a player lol

I wonder if they’ll be sought after more now that Techmoan did his video… eBay had some at similar prices when I checked and bought mine.

I was clearing out boxes of childhood junk (essentially), and ran across a box of floppies that purported to contain copies of save games. I was a bit shattered that I haven't had a floppy drive in years, because as a dumb kid I spent hours lovingly crafting Settlers 2 custom maps for my dream kingdoms, but they never survived my computer migrations. They were decent-ish mid-90s floppies too, so they may have worked, dammit :(
