Just got this because "Weird West Open World RPG with dynamic world effects from choices you make" was right up my alley.

Turns out that I should have paid more attention to the fact that it's from the creators of Dishonored. By "RPG", they mean "Isometric shooter with stealth emphasis and kind-of-poor camera controls" and there's no character growth, just getting items that give you temporary power ups. Also, there's no character creation, you play a specific character with a fixed background that starts off with your child being killed so that you have reason to go chase bad guys.

I don't know if it's a good game, but it's definitely not the game I thought I was going to play, and I've asked for a refund. The art and sound is really good and the atmosphere is outstanding, though, so if you're looking for a shooter Western horror where the first town you reach has half the population massacred because of terrible vicious marauders and it's up to you to bring vengeance upon the land, it might be the game you want!

I mean, the perks are permanent through all characters (I haven't finished the bounty hunter but I'm pretty sure you play the same "character" but inhabiting different bodies through the story) and and you can level up abilities. Definitely not RPG-level of character customization but there is character growth.

It's completely "Ok", honestly don't think there's that much to say about it.
The presentation is neat, and the story is interesting enough to want to follow, but the gameplay is very bog-standard "Go here, clear shrine, unlock more collectables and side missions"-collectathon stuff all the way through. Some of the side and main missions are neat, but there's just an insane amount of filler in-between.

I enjoyed it enough, I guess. But I'm not sure I'd recommend it at full price.

Overall the game is "bland". Bland story about a dude trying to save his sister, bland map where you go to a shrine to unlock areas of the map (And several, several, SEVERAL collectibles). Combat is serviceable, but you don't get to experiment much.

I think people who can buy in to the concept, and stay invested despite the blandness, will enjoy the game.
Thanks! I dislike the Ubisoft formula so I'm gonna pass on it this until the next huge sale. I was hoping the story and gameplay would match the interesting aesthetics.

It's a weird, janky combination of genres. Has a lot in common with There Is No Game, very meta about game development. Then it has top down RPG style exploration, turn based battles with twists, including exploits in the game and stuff, minigames, that kind of thing. So, like, two layers to the game one which is the game itself and one which is the code of the game if that makes sense.

I didn't get that far though. Seems clever but I can't tell if it's actually a good game.

This is pretty accurate, especially the last part there. The concept and aesthetic are oozing loads in this game. I loved my time with it, and as far as collect-a-thons go, it was imo, a bit more fun than other open world games. The side missions are almost kind of the best part because they have their own 'otherworldly' interactions.

The plot never gets much chance to actually develop into something really unique, and half the characters in the game don't get much screen-time to develop. Personally I think the game is a bit too short because of that. Ironically the short length of this game is what lets the combat be serviceable-, the game doesn't run on long enough for it to get stale despite limited options.

I visited Shibuya back in 2019 so I was pretty jazzed to be running through the streets again. Loved seeing all the references to japanese culture in the random lore tidbits and japanese yokai that show up.

I personally really enjoyed this game despite the flaws. I hope Tango Gameworks makes a sequel that makes better use of the concept. I think there's a lot of potential that can be ironed out in a second go around.

If you’ve been writing off every co-op FPS because it’s a “Borderlands clone”, you are missing out on some good games.

Gunfire Reborn for example is a really good recent coop roguelite FPS. Remnant from the Ashes, Vermintide, it’s a pretty long list of good games with those features at this point. I didn’t like Borderlands at all and liked all three of the above, so I would give them a shot even if Borderlands wasn’t up your alley.

I'm enjoying Weird West a lot, though it's definitely important to know going in that it's an action RPG, not a strategy RPG like Wasteland 3. There are 5 (or 6?) discrete characters that you play as with their individual stories, but if the first character is any indication they'll all have a pretty big overmap that you'll travel across with lots of locations and side poo poo to explore.

The combat and stealth are interesting-to-serviceable, and I started having a lot more fun by swapping to keyboard and mouse since I found it made aiming easier. There are character specific unlocks and customizations as well as Perks, which will stay unlocked on each subsequent story you play.
