The thing they don't like about modern currency isn't that it's digital, but that it's fiat. The Federal Reserve could* print a trillion more dollars tomorrow. Then everyone would have to work out what they feel about dollars now there are a lots more of them, which is probably bad news if all of your savings are dollars. Getting more of either gold and bitcoin is a really slow and expensive process, either digging in mines or burning electricity doing pointless calculations. A lot of the benefits of a gold standard are very silly magical thinking, but it's totally a coherent position to support both bitcoin and gold-backed currencies. That was the advertising pitch for bitcoin! It's like gold, but you don't have to ship heavy bars around whenever you want to make a drug deal.

No this is The One Joke about the misleadingly named Global Warming: "If global warming then why winter cold?" essentially rolled up with the whataboutism that you can sum up as "warm good".

This is a bad take that ingores the fact the weather around the globe is becoming more and more extreme precisely because of global warming and huge swaths of people are inconvinienced by both cold and warm changes to the weather, not to mention things like hurricanes, tornadoes and floods, all of which happen in the US. Also the less visible loving up of the plant lifecycle, causing damage to crops and why strawberries, grapes and cherries are up in price by 50% year after year.

I agree on the "passable for his style" art.

Yup, by selling on the marketplace you are, in effect, paying Amazon a commission to do market research for them. Once they are ready with an "Amazon basic" version of the product, they have insurmountable competitive advantages. First, all the market data from all sellers in that product category. Second, the fact that 10% to 45% of the final price on the market place is Amazon's cut, since they don't have to pay that, it leaves a lot of extra room for them to undercut your prices while remaining profitable.

A kinda-sorta-maybe good cartoon along the same lines would go something like "if you think that having warm days in winter is great, remember that it would also mean having 60C summers". Or mention the fact that there is more and more places in the world where not having AC during summer heat spikes can literally kill you by cooking your brain.

This is just "everyone is so focused on Ukraine, and needs me, Ted Rall, to remind them that actually global warming bad. Also obviously they don't get it, because they are dumb and think that warmer weather is good".

"I get the feeling it's not like it used to be."
by Micaël as seen in the Croix Hebdo. My partner says that the title of this comic "Vote conjugal" is probably a pun on "Viol Conjugal" or marital rape. I suspect the intention is either voting sucks or more obliquely that voting is often a forced marriage of a candidate you don't much approve of, which is often the case everywhere but I've never felt it quite so much in France, where everyone seems to constantly hate every single one of their politicians without exception.

I'm down to 6 candidates for the Charlie Hebdo election so I'm going to 2 longish posts where I go through 3 at a time, the first today will be the other nonish-starters and then tomorrow the "Big" 3.

Charlie Hebdo

Eric Zemmour "The Face of Hatred"

the new flavor of far-right candidate, he's been polling better than anyone would like, using what I suspect is a Trump-ish playbook (or is it a Duterte playbook? Who started this?). My students HATE him and in the circles I hang out in he's definitely a bogeyman in the way Le Pen used to be/is, if he hadn't stolen her thunder. Don't get me wrong. Everyone still hates Le Pen, but this guy exchanged the dog-whistles for a megaphone. He's not likely to win, but his voters would almost all join Le Pen in the run-off. The real hope is if he can siphon enough votes off of her and to get a leftist candidate in the run-off (HA!).

Delta Variant: A new wave for 2022

A interesting portrait of anti-Zemmour protestors (at the very top) and pro-Zemmour individuals (mostly bottom). Toulon is described as "a fascist city with no horizon", despite the sea being just behind the buildings. I guess it's been run by the FN (Front Nationale) for some time. The final line quotes a pied-noir, a French person who was born in French Algeria, before the independence and then returned to France so guess they're general politics, "[Zemmour] is the only one who can save us, Le Pen has betrayed us."

"After the sorority, the Zemmourity"
I want to say that's Le Pen? I don't know if he was ever affiliated with the FN, but it'd make sense. Otherwise, he just hates women, ie supports traditional families, so it may just be that. This accompanied an article detailing one of his rallies that's paywalled.

CW: Ableism
"Zemmour against inclusion: 'Mongolians return back to your country!"'
French isn't a particularly good language at times. Mongolian would not be the demonym for people from that fine country in this case, but I don't feel like writing a slur. In French the same word is used for both, even if the worse definition is not really in vogue from what I can tell. Still, this is a pretty typical bigoted comic from Charlie Hebdo.

"Aborted at 14 weeks: 'They're preventing me from getting my 500 signatures!'"
Like I said pro-traditional values and you need 500 signatures from, I want to say mayors, to be able to run for president.

"No Nazism for Zemmour: 'He doesn't have an economic program."'

Zemmour was a former radio personality and journalist. He goes on and on how the French have forgotten their history so this strip has him re-write historical moments including the time the French threw Algerians into the Seine (now Olympic Swimmers); Napoleon at Waterloo (just a horse race); and De Gaulle's call for liberation (just soccer commentary).

"You're not born a Zemmour, you become one!"
This accompanied an article on the women who work for his campaign it seems.

Anne Hidalgo "What matters is that you participated"

Hidalgo is running as the candidate of the PS, or Socialist Party (Parti Socialiste). This was Hollande's party, and the party to which Macron nominally belonged to before declaring himself a centrist. His new party effectively killed the Socialist party, already weakened by Hollande's own rather milquetoast presidency. Still the survive and Hidalgo is the heir to the "main" center-left party. She's also currently the mayor of Paris, so she won't be out of a job when she loses. Leaving near Paris, I don't have many complaints. There's a lot of bike paths now and she's rather anti-car, so hooray? Covid was handled rather poorly but that's not surprising.

This accompanied an article on education reform. Hidalgo's fix is to double teacher's salaries, which the writer says is too simple to really fix anything. The drawing shows what seems to be religious extremists (guess what flavor), in charge of school, the link between the two not being clear to me.

"When I grow up, I'm going to be made fun of!"

"Hidalgo: Republican equality as her compass. 'Ah! Women and their sense of direction.'"
By compass we mean moral compass of course. Gotta love that caricature!

:nws:
"Towards victory!" Obviously a reference to Delacroix's 'Liberty leading the people'.

"Housing crisis: 'When you look, you'll find something."'
Parisian property prices are among the highest in the world, and Hidalgo promised to do something.

:nws:
"Worse than a bukkake: the left-wing primaries"
Marianne for those not in the know, is the French equivalent of Uncle Sam, or the British John Bull, not that you ever see him now that I think about it.

I was tickled to learn that a nickname for people named Anne over here is 'Anne Solo', I've heard it a few times before. This refers to the fact that Hidalgo has zero backing from any prominent Socialist party members and reports on a rally she held, which is shown to be rather sad and empty.

Ukraine, the escalation

Yannick Jadot "in Green, and against everyone"

The Green party candidate. I think they've won things locally and in the European elections but no one seems to like them much. I doubt he has much chance to win. Stands a better chance of spoiling the most popular left candidate than Hidalgo at any rate. For some reason there's more comics against this guy so far. Maybe just an easier punching bag.

"I'm unemployed and homeless." The article seems to critique the idea of reducing work hours as a method to lower unemployment. This the same dude who opposed Hidalgo's doubling of teacher's salaries, named Littauer, so maybe they just have a Rall-like thing about them?

"A diesel tax in 2018 and a glysophate ban in 2022: 'They want to kill us!'"

"The potatoes have voted Jadot: 'He's made us sprout!'"

"A new green laicity?: 'No veils, unless they're vegetated."'

:nws:
"I've made ecology sexy."

"Jadot at Laon: A long speech is worth more than the end of the world" A presentation of one of his rallies, there's too many words and maybe that's the joke. It's remarked that it's a far calmer affair than Zemmour's things.

"EELV: A political compost pile that smells of smoke." This and the following images, all featuring different primary candidates, are on the primaries that led to Jadot's selection.

"Here we reconnect with nature."

"Here, we'll set-up windmills in each office."

"Here, we protect all species."

"The GIEC report takes too much paper, it's killing the forests."

"Imposter", "Traitor"

"There's still time to act."

"Hot women think that leftists are super gross, actually, they only want cool dudes like me" is basically 90% of Day By Day strips, this just has less nudity (and defines "cool dude" as "someone who votes for Dems" rather than "someone who votes for Republicans").

Like if you agree with him that all leftists are bad and are essentially fascists then you do you but I think he's a piece of poo poo.

e: That last statement probably comes off a bit harsher than I intended, sorry about that. Like I don't think the guy is completely awful or as bad as a chud. He's capable of having good opinions about things and he probably does on most issues. He just seems to think all leftists are tankies which pisses me off because it causes him to draw those cartoons where he's like "Leftists are as bad as chuds, actually," or the lovely one of Bernie and AOC dragging the crying leftist against his will. Strawmen are still strawmen, regardless of whether a conservative or a liberal draws it.

STOLEN ELECTIONS HAVE CATASTROPHIC CONSEQUENCES

Mitt Romney comes through again…for the Democrats!

Thanks to Republican In Name Only (RINO) politicians such as Mitt Romney, Ketanji Brown Jackson will be seated on the Supreme Court.

The qualification for such a position no longer includes superior legal credentials and a great legal mind, but rather skin color and sex. Jackson is a black female, and those were her most important qualifications. The left no longer cares about who is most qualified, but rather they desire to fulfill their holy quest of diversity. When you hear that word along with ‘equity’ and ‘inclusion’ you know you’re listing to woke-ism.

This is not to say Jackson isn’t smart (even though she doesn’t know what a woman is), but the point is she was chosen over many other candidates simply because of her sex and skin color. She’s likely to rule in favor of woke-ism should such a case involving it arrive. Who knows, the Supreme Court might end up ruling that a man can become a real, biological woman regardless of what real science says. We’re being led down a path of delusion, nihilism, and insanity. Romney is supposedly a conservative, but apparently he agrees with all things woke—including heaping copious praise upon the late drug-addled criminal, George Floyd.

It’s time for the voters to remove the RINOs and regain the representation they need. Oh, but I forgot…voting is rigged nowadays. We first need to rid ourselves of the voting machines, corrupt mail-in balloting, and big money corruption by billionaires such as Soros and Mark Zuckerberg.

Meanwhile, RINOs such as Romney will continue to take delight in angering his constituents by aligning himself with corrupt and mentally deficient Democrats including Pelosi and Biden.
