The question is in past tense, it's not asking about current restrictions.

Ah, you're right! But that just makes it not terribly applicable to the original discussion since they were clearly referencing current attitudes towards future waves of COVID.

E: And honestly, I would expect those numbers to shift higher over time anyway. People's current beliefs and experiences tend to color their perceptions of past events. It's an ever-present problem in public health.

EE: Probably they'll do a "COVID retrospective" survey somewhere down the road, so we might actually get to see!

Agreed but I don't know if shifting attitudes is something you can actually change here. I'd guess a lot of people are going to answer it based on their current perceived personal risk and if they/people they care about died/became disabled.

Seems like an unproductive, arguing about arguing track you want to go down.

Returning to a normal life when there's a highly infectious coronavirus that's killed millions around the world would mean that you've stamped out community transmission in your area. When someone's like "we've turned a corner, we're entering a new phase, feel free to go to the bar", they ought to mean there is zero community covid transmission. There are places that can get to that point and legit have life return to normal, but you're gonna see Americans get their hackles up when someone talks like that because it's exactly the same language our politicians use to lie to us.

While I agree with you in general about American perceptions, it's no longer true that there are places capable of actually getting COVID cases back down to zero (unless China manages to pull off a miracle in the coming months). The only totally COVID-free jurisdictions left are various South Pacific islands who closed their borders early, have kept them closed, and never recorded cases in the first place.

Regarding this, Naomi Wu has made what I feel to be a pretty persuasive argument that Shanghai's example is an aberration based on local officials mismanagement of the outbreak.

That said even she admits the odds that Shanghai manage to return to COVID zero is uncertain so I'm not sure exactly how persuasive this is for my point that covid zero is a legit possibility lol

Another one of these.

For an adult population of which 97% are at least one shot / possible data weirdness on 10% for the second, and for 44% boosted at least once:

Even with a let's call it "baseline" level of infections:

Hospitalizations are at "One COVID inpatient specialist for every 8.4 million residents"

Deaths are currently somewhere around the "killed by random car" level of risk:

Long COVID is weirder, and I've seen a few people with multiple comorbidities / BMI's well north of 35 complain about dyspnea going up the stairs, but the workups have been remarkably negative. Omicron just doesn't scorch the lungs like Delta or wildtype COVID for my vaccinated folk.

All of Shanghai has been locked down for 9 days now, with Pudong and parts much longer (weeks). And they just announced 23,600 cases with more than 7,000 cases in Pudong alone. Whatever they're doing here, it doesn't seem to be having a lot of effect so far.

I have the strong suspicion that the periodic tests are pretty much periodic superspreader events. In my compound they're decent about keeping distance, only testing one building at a time, and always masking. But even here people are getting lax and the old folks are taking the testing moments as an opportunity to chat and do calisthenics. And elsewhere I've seen videos of hallways full of people all having to go get a test. If anyone tests positive in a batch, you're gonna have to go stand in line again to get another personal test.

so i've been pretty much stuck at home since the pandemic started. initially it was totally fine with me because i lived alone and didn't really worry much about being infected or infecting anyone else. but now i'm having to deal with my family and they're driving me insane. so for the first time since the panemic began, i feel like i really, REALLY need to go out and socialize with people to keep some semblence of sanity. but the problem is, i'm still quite scared of catching covid.

so here's my conundrum. there's a huge party being thrown tomorrow in some hotel/club-like place, and there should be around 100 people there. my last vaccination was last may. i haven't gotten any boosters.

should i go?

Not for nothing, but my county in NY was hovering around ~100 daily cases for most of March and has been creeping up slowly into the mid-200s over the past weeks and now yesterday it was 466. Am I wrong, or is a big April wave coming?

Ontario's COVID science advisor says wastewater viral loads imply 100k cases/day in the province of 14.6M people, worse than the January peak. Official case counts are nowhere near that number, although Ontario changed their methodology about a month ago so they're not comparable to the previous counts (not like they were reliable in an absolute sense either).

Looking at NJ, official case counts are double the low point from ~4 weeks ago, but still way lower than the January peak. Tests are down, but not proportionally. My university does asymptomatic testing and positivity has gone up rather alarmingly since restrictions were lifted about two weeks ago, but they were happy to inform everyone that the figure isn't useful anymore because mandatory testing frequency dropped from weekly to monthly and more symptomatic people are taking tests. I'm not sure how they know that symptomatic people are taking tests intended for the asymptomatic, or why this isn't a major concern, but hey.

Do you have any underlying health conditions that put you at higher risk? If yes, imo don't go especially since you haven't had a booster.

If you don't have any high-risk conditions I guess that's up to you. "I really want to go to this big club party with 100 people but also I don't want to get COVID and didn't get a booster" is an odd combo.

Even wearing a good-quality respirator that's still a pretty high risk environment.

Where do you live that you have not gotten a booster? No, I would not go. Outdoor socializing, okay maybe. Indoor with very small groups like close friends and family, okay maybe. Indoor huge party at a club? If you don't give a gently caress at all then do whatever, but if you actually are still quite scared of catching covid, then stay away.

If it's been nearly a year since your last shot and you haven't gotten any boosters, then there's a fair chance you'll catch Omicron.

And in general, it's a better idea to socialize occasionally with smaller groups of people, instead of barricading yourself indoors until the cabin fever gets so bad that you suddenly want to go out to giant hundred-person parties.

If you're over 50 or immunocompromised and its 4+ months after your previous booster, get the shot. Otherwise they'll probably recommend one for everyone in the fall.

My personal opinion: get it if you want it, there's plenty to go around and they're basically begging people to get boosted since the original two don't work great against omicron vs. symptomatic infection (though still work fine to keep you out of the hospital). Also there's gonna be a wave after Easter, mark my words, local numbers are ticking steadily up everywhere (though hospitalizations are remaining flat, that'll change too about three weeks after Easter).

It takes about two weeks for full effectiveness after a booster shot. Take the previous into your calculations as you will.
