It’d be way less offputting in the uncanny valley sense if the entire face was a screen imo

I'm not searching for it but I know people posted a mod awhile back for MH world that did this to the monsters, although I don't know if they were physics-enabled

Probably didn't come with the proper Weakness Exploit-enabled hitzones that would be required to be a good mod either

That said, I'm pretty solid at character action games and I could not follow a goddamn second of that fight. Is that normal or has the combat been modded?

It just looks like a kingdom hearts game to me? The need to mesh conflicting art/animation styles into [generic JRPG shonen-protagonist transplanted into a world full of disney icons, and the final product must look like a disney IP where all creative staff are subordinate to merch/marketing clowns] having been given a higher priority over the need to make a playable game... results in a bunch of meaningless visual noise that you mostly just have to learn to filter for QTE/reaction-prompts and telegraphed attacks.

No that's just how it is. They're using the final boss of KH2, as a data fight- which is a superhard endgame version of themselves- as Darth Vader in KH3- which is 5 games afterwards*- so it's even more aggressive and dodgy than usual and there are more mechanics to it now.

*Much like how Assassin's Creed, Resident Evil 4 and Uncharted 4 are the sixth games in their series.

Yeah the difference between KH and other character action games is theres a lot of long, context sensitive animations in KH. Contrast to DMC where each button press leads into a short, distinct attack animation, perfectly deterministic. In Kh what moves you go into depends on the enemys state, stilll deterministic but you dont have as much granular control as DMC.

That bit from the opening until the targeting reticule comes up is 1 press of block (super generous block frames, block time extends if an enemy comboes ) and then like 4-5 presses of attack, and no modifier buttons either.

Outside of KH2, the series doesn't really do quick time events tbh.

Those are a lot of words for Kingdom Hearts gameplay. I've only played half of the first game and like, parts of the second game but AFAIK all you do in those games combat-wise is mash a single button and occasionally do some kind of special ability or use a potion to top off your health. They're pretty mindless in my experience, but what do I know?

Yeah, in that video it looks like a lot of wild poo poo is happening, but really all that's going on is the player is pressing the lock-on button sometimes, pressing the jump button to jump/dodge around and pressing the attack button. As in, the single button you mash to attack.

I also hope that Kingdom Hearts 4 will have a low mid and high swings and an entire separate method to stabs and overhead strikes.

Probation
Can't post for 17 hours!
I recall seeing some videos of a top-tier KH player with some embarrassing name like Bizkit47 (nice-seeming guy, whatever his name might suggest), showing how best to clear the hardest bosses and challenges in the game under various challenge conditions. Seeing him on streams, the most surprising aspect is that relatively little input occurs. The player gets within a wide lock-on range of the enemy and then it's a manner of memorizing and repeat guard, dodge and counter input variations that maximize enemy stun, occasionally using other magic/gimmick attacks to increase damage output. Almost all enemy attacks are guarded or dodged with a dedicated dodge button, and attacks lock onto the player's location. The only thing that matters location-wise is standing where you can see all the scripted attacks coming in.

fake edit: it was in fact bizkit047; here's a vid of him clearing a version of the final boss.
