The Facebook group for the comic has several people in it close enough to him to check in from time to time, and he apparently wanted us to know his health is fine but as a one-man show he's taking time to focus on just the comic and IRL stuff. Eh, the direct market started up in the 1970s, so if this was 1980- well, I could imagine Young Harry maybe not being aware of it yet but they were very much already a thing.

Rarebit is an excellent comic but honestly the framing narrative holds it back. It'd be on another level if it was just strange things with no explanation. Or if it threw a curveball every once in a while, like this (great) edit.
