As we mentioned previously, after the Potlatch Riot and its aftermath George Cotterill decided not to stand for another term as Seattle mayor. That left a vacuum on the ballot, resulting in ten candidates representing four parties in the race.

Somewhere in there was the guy that came before Cotterill, Hiram Gill, who earned the dubious distinction of being the first American mayor to undergo a recall election....just after Washington state granted women's suffrage. And one of his big platforms was an "open town" policy...which meant official tolerance of gambling, saloons, and prostitution. As long as it stayed inside its borders (you paid his corrupt police chief Charles Wappenstein a monthly donation), you were golden.

When two vice lords built a 500-room brothel on Beacon Hill with a 15-year lease from the city, that was one step too far. 86% of the newly registered women voted against him in the 1911 recall, handing the office to real estate man George W. Dilling. That duck looks an awful lot like Gill, who was running on a "closed city" platform this time, and the "Dream Book" he's toting would make sense in that at this juncture the Times wasn't wasting much ink on him. After all, the dude lost his last comeback attempt to that pinko Cotterill. The very idea.

Of course, Gill had to go and win anyway, proving that either dreams do come true sometimes, or that there really is a sucker born every minute.

One more note before we move on: Seattle Times publisher Alden Blethen, who was a supporter of the open city plan as long as it was restricted and regulated, almost got indicted in a grand jury investigation that sent Charles Wapperstein to prison.

Rarebit isn't just melted cheese; it also has milk, flour, butter, spices, and beer. It's roughly a mildly spicy mac n' cheese sauce with a little beer subbed for some of the milk. But not nearly enough beer to give you weird dreams (like, 1 ounce per serving). Maybe if you were lactose-intolerant?

To be exact, it would happen 475 days from Christmas Eve 1959... or 495 days from the date on Santa's rocket. The inclusion of the date for this prediction seems to indicate that Beeman knew people would be looking back on this one and checking him. Hi, Art! You were right! ...even though the Russians did it first, and then it was another 314 days after that until a non-commie did it too. But hey, then America made it to the Moon. :patriot:

Beeman is explicitly making a prediction that "man will soon do it", that is, fly around the world in one night like Santa Claus is doing there on his rocket-sleigh. He was correct, and I was noting exactly how soon it would be, counting from the date this strip appeared in the papers (Christmas Eve 1959) and also from the date that's written on Santa's rocket (20 days before that; probably the day he drew it).

Sorry if I was unnecessarily cryptic about it. :)
