madeintaipei posted:Hell, the current German state paid out WW1 Askari in the 1950's. The US and Vietnam still identify and repatriate MIA soldiers' remains. The story of how the Askari were paid is a great military anecdote in itself. The Askaris were native troops raised by this very German fellow in East Africa to fight the British in WW1. They did a very good job of it. As an illustration, von Lettow-Vorbeck's forces were in the middle of an offensive into what is now Zimbabwe when they were informed that the rest of Germany had signed the Armistice several days earlier to avoid their forces on the Western Front being totally overrun. When he was marched off to a British POW camp every one of his Askaris tried to follow him. As German soldiers who had fulfilled their terms of enlistment, the Weimar Republic and the prewar Nazi regime issued them pensions despite the former Askaris now being residents of British colonies. Then WW2 happened and things got complicated. It wasn't until 1964 than the West German government decided to resume paying the remaining Askaris. The trouble was that it was now fifty years since the war began and most of the surviving Askaris who could make it to where the German officials were waiting to register them didn't have their original paperwork because they lived in the middle of Africa during the 20th century. Since the Askaris were owed what in African terms was a sizeable chunk of change, the Germans wanted to make sure they paid the right people. Some were able to provide bits of their old uniforms as proof but many had nothing at all in the way of evidence of service. One of the bankers involved, an ex-soldier himself, suggested that those claimants without documentation perform the old Imperial manual of arms using a broom in place of a K98k. Not a man failed to complete the drill and all were paid.

I’m pretty sure it’s a toss up of what each one is loaded with to call it. If the Russians published her empty displacement, it’s no contest at all.

Turkey is not a belligerent so has no reason or right to hold them. The news out of Belgorod tonight is interesting. I think the Ukrainians were warning of the possibility of a bombing there as a false flag a couple of days ago. As far as I know they never claimed responsibility for the helicopter attack the other day either.
