In theory, you could guess the right "pattern" on your first guess and still lose (at least in hard mode) since there's more then 6 possibilities. Share, Shade, Shape, Shave, Shake, Shale, I think Shane might also be a word? but that white be odd to guess before shame. But since odds are you doing guess one of those words as #1, you really have more like 4 or 5 guess at most, and even with eliminating other letters in the other guesses, you so can easily have multiple possible words it could be.

I've been checking out that nytimes wordlebot that rates your games and found something odd today: My first guess was cheat which at that point the bot says there are 4 possible solutions. My second guess was chewy, which the bot rated as worthless and there were still 4 possible solutions. I've been thinking this for a while, but the set of answers that wordle will accept is larger than the actual set of solutions isn't it? For instance, I don't think I've seen a solution that is a plural of another word. And I don't think I've seen a solution that's really a very uncommon word. It will let you guess all sorts of antiquated words but I've never actually seen one as the solution. Or it could just be a bug. By "possible solutions" it just means words that are Wordle's list of possible solutions. I've tried opening another browser and playing badly just to see what the bot says. And if you narrow it down to what the bot says is "one word" and then guess something weird it will explicitly say this. edit: That sort of did sound argumentative I suppose.
