I hadn't noticed until fairly recently when I went to save one but the Whomp comics have some decent puns in their titles/filenames. ----- vyelkin posted:Transdimensional Brain Chip It's time for some boring math! As one of them points out here, your body count is a little low. I'll spoil this partly because it hasn't been made explicit (I don't think it ever is) but mostly because it's pedantry. There's no plot points hidden here. We know that each Ulf splits in two at noon each Monday, and Thorsby is kind enough to indicate when that happens in the comic and exactly how many Ulfs there are. Week 12 started with 2588 Ulfs, but week 13 started with 4534, which means week 12 ended with 2267. We're missing 321, or about 12%. More than one in ten Ulfs didn't make it through the week. I'm too lazy to upload a graph but the Ulf Survival Rate has been declining since week 5 and even sped up slightly since ours became filthy rich in week nine/ten, though compared to the instant doubling at the start of each week it's been easily drowned out and Ulf is presumably too bad at math to have noticed before now. Alternatively you could consider the potential number of Ulfs if all of them had survived and split (powers of two), which gives week 13's 4534 out of 8192 a rather grim 55% still-connected rate, but that feels unfair because if an Ulf is shot, or blown up, or his chip damaged, he's not going to continue splitting (and we can keep Lostclock happy and rule out duplicating ghost Ulfs). I could be making a mistake at this point even with Excel helping me but I think if you only count Ulfs that actually existed, we're up to 566 disconnected in total, which matches the "over five hundred" figure mentioned here in strip 53. Or about 20% lost as a percentage, but I don't know if that's a meaningful calculation what with all the multiverse stuff.

I actually think it's tremendously fair, or at least notable -- from the perspective of Ulf at the start of the comic, by now he's survived 55% of his possible futures. The calculation you're doing here is "survival odds". Ditocoaf has a new favorite as of 07:45 on Apr 15, 2022 |

I think this is exactly how I feel about it. And the more I post it, the more I wonder if it's better experienced as a binge. Getting a slow drip of what's happening can be frustrating for a comic that's already skimpy on exposition. I was driven by liking the art and wanting to find out what happens next, or an ultimate explanation, but enjoying the ride all the same. But that may be lost when you only get a few pages at a time. It's like getting teased as opposed to losing yourself in it.

Boba Pearl posted:I get that one though, when I started my comic I wanted it to be gritty wacky hijinks comedy like It's Always Sunny but in a fantasy setting, and then I realized that I had given everyone extremely traumatizing traits as a way to get them on the adventure, now I have to decide how to get these people act believably. Technically Spider GF has known my main character for a total of 18 hours (or maybe a few days depending because I kept the passage of time vague.) So I have to temper "I want to do fun couple things with the spider girlfriend" with "How do I have someone completely isolate themselves from any friends or relatives for someone who seems like a good top, and not have it seem extremely creepy because of the power dynamic." ah, I was willing to give Spinderella a sort of pass on any weird traits or boundary issues cause she's a pact offering demon. Why WOULD she have our same hangups?

The way it's playing out in my head is the mind reading part. Marie has golden retriever energy and Spinnelope can tell this girl has no thoughts even close to something that problematic. Will probably say that explicitly in a later comic. E: Like whens he tapped out in the dommy mommy scene in the between, part of that is because she can see into Marie's mind and knows she was in no danger.

New Adventures of the Duck Avenger it's been a hot minute since we've seen this guy so just a quick recap: this is Odin Eidolon, the lead developer of future robots like Lyla Lay, the Avenger's friend who is also a time cop from the future. Secretly, Odin is also the future self of One, the Avenger's AI buddy.

I think having a guy ask his transdimensional counterpart who's brain he is wired into to hold onto his girlfriend for comfort as he is vaporized by a nuclear weapon is a pretty good and effective way to illustrate the stakes of a story beyond "we lost contact with some guys, turns out it's nukes". It's not strictly an escalation in the plot but it works really well emotionally in the context of the comic.
