quote:

“We’ll turn boats back. Turning boats back means that you don’t need offshore detention,” Albanese told reporters in Cessnock on Thursday.

Less than three hours later, Albanese clarified his statement by saying “of course” Labor still supported offshore detention.

“It was established in 2013 when I was the deputy prime minister. I was asked today about boat turnbacks - our position is clear, we continue to support them,” he said.

He said boat turnbacks were the “preference” to offshore detention.

“At the moment there aren’t people who have gone into offshore detention because the boats have been turned back. It’s been effective.”

Rudd also had the issue of Federal Labor knifing two leaders in only a couple of years and giving the public reason to vote in the Liberals for stability. Albanese isn't more popular or well liked than Morrison in an election primarily about Morrison. Morrison is unpopular but isn't terminally unpopular.

I can only hope you are right but I do not think Labor's uninspiring small target strategy works particularly well when 3/4 of the media has Morrison's back. Preferred two party for the Liberals is trending up and Morrison's approval rating appears to be ticking upwards while Albanese's approval rating is ticking downwards. And a lot of the opposition, like the Teals, will still give them enough to form a minority government if it ever comes to that.

But getting to it. That's not the hard part.

It's letting go.
My theory was that they were going to dump Morrison just before calling an election, ask Australia to give them another chance, and ride it out to a potentially ugly victory, purely on how many people seemed to view him unfavourably. I'm shocked that it seems like Labor's still fumbling it badly - though, in fairness, any fumble on their side is going to be blown up by our media.

We LOL at death! Watch us LOL. Love the LOL.
They’re also offering almost no policies of consequence except for a federal ICAC so it’s not like there’s a lot of big positive stuff to attract coverage - of course because they are assuming that whatever they do, the negative Murdoch blowback will be worse than whatever positive attention they get. But the net result is death one inch at a time.

Edit: I mean my priorities are probably shared by a lot of progressive Australians and they are something like 1) serious action on climate change 2) economic opportunity for this and future generations, including actually functional education, research and VET sectors and transitioning away from being a petrostate 3) greater economic and social inclusion and equity, especially helping Australia’s most disadvantaged. And what are the ALP offering?

Basically as soon as they supported the stage 3 tax cuts and dropped the commitment to raising the dole I was done with them. The stage 3 cuts will cost something like $15b/year ultimately and almost entirely benefit a single digit percentage of the population, while all of Newstart costs like $5b/year? It’s crazy that you can support the tax cuts over the dole, as even from an economic stimulus perspective every dollar of the dole increase would go straight back into the economy and domestic demand, while a shitload of the tax cut will either be parked somewhere illiquid or go overseas into offshore investments. It both makes no sense and is Bad unless priority uno is supporting the rich. The fact that the ALP are wedged to this extent makes them pointless except on the “less evil” meter - which isn’t nothing but is only relevant if they actually win.

This doom posting is ridiculous. Corruption is one of the biggest issues in this campaign and Albo running on an ICAC is one of the few topics Murdoc can't (although they try) successfully run a fear campaign on. So of course its going to be the big ticket thing he runs on.

Everyone knew the polls would tighten going into an election, but unless something incredible happens the current polling is terminal for Morrison and we will have a labor government you can moan about being lesser evil than the party that wants to ban trans kids from school and pro-corruption.

Don’t get me wrong, I sure hope so. I can also foresee they are going to get ripped apart from both sides as all the poo poo the LNP has baked in (climate change resistance, breaking the uni sector, massive structural revenue holes due to the tax cuts) starts to really hit. And as they won’t have run on anything they won’t have a “mandate”.

my point is that albanese being a poor campaigner is not proof labor are & were always doomed, it's just opened a 'this is how labor can still throw this' scenario.

a lot of the teals are running to the left of labor on a bunch of issues & would find it much easier to negotiate with labor given shared priorities. we're not likely to see more than one or two new ones anyway. don't see any way that a liberal + teals minority government wouldn't be a dysfunctional mess given how mad the dominant right of the liberals would be. especially since they'd likely be reliant on one nation to pass legislation in the senate too

don't even think a small target strategy is necessarily bad but they are doing a pretty poor job of executing it, they're just terrible at tactics (similar problem to last time really) and seemingly always on the defense pre-emptively.

i think albanese is disappointing in just about every way but the doomposting here is getting ridiculous - yes, labor could still lose this but it's far from guaranteed and certainly wasn't always going to be the case

my prediction is that a national integrity commission/federal ICAC will become the new carbon trading scheme: The Greens will introduce a bill for a federal ICAC that actually has teeth and it will get voted down by everyone else. Labor will introduce a National Integrity Commission that will be piss weak and not solve anything, The Greens will vote against it, and so will the Libs, so then we have to put up with a decade of "the Greens don't want an anti corruption commission"

a good icac bill already passed the senate last year, supported by labor/greens/crossbench. idk why you would expect this of all things to suddenly be the flashpoint of greens/labor tensions under a labor government

the greens' demands for any labor icac bill, in a statement today, are: "able to hold public hearings, act on anonymous tip-offs and investigate historical matters" and these are already all labor policy. if labor wanted a piss weak useless one or thought it was politically expedient they would have just backed the liberals' bill
