Seventeen is a really good word to sing in English. Lots of vowels. I have no idea what the age of consents in the 60s-70s were since I'm not a libertarian.

A good rule for history is the further you go back in time the lower it gets.

France is still working on establishing a formal age of consent. Oddly enough it's one of the few areas in social progress where the US leapfrogged the rest of the world.

It actually makes a lot of sense. Laws around sexual consent and marriages are a huge part of how the settler organized colonial states, and in North America, strict laws about marriage were used specifically to disrupt and destroy existing Indigenous practices and kinship networks. My experience is primarily with how it was used in Canada, but a lot of that is tied into the specific policy decisions in the US. (for example, when the LDS banned Mormon polygyny the hardline polygamists in the church went north to Canada, where they could practice still if they were a bit more careful.)

I was mostly bringing it up in terms of Paul McCartney with I Saw Her Standing There. 20 year old Paul singing about a 17 year old because its such a tuneful word is maybe a little squicky but wasn't meant to necessarily be a pedo anthem or really notable at the time.

Iggy Pop is a solid yikes though.

There is some untruth there. Arranged marriages for royals and important families often occured between teenagers and grown adults but the marriage wasn't consummated. Average folks had a bit of decency and let people grow up before they were sent to the babby mines.

Same thing with mortality rates if you factor in early childhood deaths no one could live past 30. Except yeah, infanticide was a thing. Too many mouths to feed, have you tried putting the baby out in the cold?

Oh boy if you're talking about 70s musicians being rapey with underage girls look no further than the original album cover of The Scorpions album, Virgin Killer. Warning: it's straight up child porn. It was an album cover.

I try not to.

When I visit my parents they put on the music of the 70s while we play cards. I sometimes have a need to point out that this is creepy

Joan Jett covered it. The original version is about a 17yo girl sang by a dude.

This made me lookup Winger - Seventeen to see how yikes the lyrics are and I appreciate that the description on Genius is “Fun Fact: Kip Winger was 27 when he wrote this”

A while back I remarked to my wife “Man, I love David Lee Roth so it’s a pleasant surprise that he hasn’t been Me Too’d” and she said “buddy if you don’t think he banged a TON of underage groupies you’re an idiot” and I had to sigh at that one

Yeah a lot of recording artists get up to statutory rape and we never hear about it because the girls don't come forward, either because they don't want to or for various reasons like they're scared or they didn't know what they did was illegal.

Why would an ambulance be leaving the hospital?
I know when I was a teen in the 90s, we would never have thought of seventeen as like, 'paedophile' creepy. It was more like 19 is considered now. Like, if you're a grown adult you have no business going there, but it's just skeevy, not evil. That attitude seems to be shifting now thank goodness, the one area where American cultural dominance might be helping.

The Joan Jett song was I Love Rock and Roll where she says he must of been just about seventeen but it doesn't matter to me cause its all the same.

Edge of Seventeen, at least I thought, doesn't really get into that.

I think we have to accept that every single male musician from the 70s that got within a mile of hitting the Top 40 hosed someone underage.

Thankfully, odds are they'll all be dead in another decade or so, so by that point there's no guilt in financially supporting them by buying their albums!

Boomer sexuality seems pretty hosed and horrible overall. I remember some older colleagues dismissing Tara Reade’s allegations against Biden not because they thought she was lying, but because that sort of thing was not really that big of a deal to them and just something to deal with in the professional world.

Like I said, it doesn't. It's about Stevie Nicks' emotional response to the deaths of her uncle and John Lennon in December 1980. But originally she had intended to write a song about teenage romance using that as the title and lyric, after a conversation with Tom Petty's wife where Mrs Petty said she'd met Tom at the age of seventeen and Nicks misunderstood her because of her thick southern accent. So while the song isn't about older men and teenage girls, the title is.

Yeah. I mean there's enough trouble with public opinion when the guy is accused of clearly non-consensual, sometimes even violent, sexual misconduct. I can't imagine very many people consider whatever monetary and/or emotional benefit they get from coming forward being worth the emotional - and possibly monetary - cost of having to navigate the court of public opinion.

Like a clear lack of consent is not enough for most people today to call rape rape, I can't imagine they would somehow be more able to grasp the idea that a child cannot provide meaningful consent and that no matter what a 16 year old girl tells an adult man, she is not consenting.
