Tempest owns but made the right calls when it was too late around the wrong drat people every time. Woulda loved to see that baby and his fishmom grow up together. What's up with them again, I should rewatch the last eps because I was so :O I missed some Big Lores. The fishmen are grandmothers' right, she's evolving them into weird for her ~AI protocol gone too far, uncharitable interpretation of intention~ thing, right? But what's bad about being fishfolk? I'm less interested in being the longface-dog-monkey alien, but the mermaids? Well I can't not support the mermaids. I'm pro mother, pro-mermaids. I'm anti-grandma but... if the mermans are hers, am I pro-grandma? Ah geez

The best thing about the tanks is when they started interacting with one up close in some scenes and you suddenly realized it wasn't just bad CGI, it was an actual tank actually textured exactly like bad CGI. It was kind of amazing.

I have some really bad news for you. IIRC the show was advertised as the most expensive show to ever be filmed in South Africa. It's a huge rear end town sized production

Exactly, it has three moons! When the Earth's full moon is out it casts shadows, imagine how much brighter it would be with three of them. With a pristine unpolluted atmosphere it would seem bright as hell at night.

I don't get why every show these days just doesn't use the massive wrap around background screen running unreal engine tech that Mandalorian/Boba Fett used? Everything is in on one sound stage, no need to go to Ireland or Africa or Australia to shoot outdoor scenes. Surely that would be the cheapest option.

There's only 2 of those in existence iirc. One for Mandalorian/Boba Fett and one in that was recently built in Toronto that Discovery/Strange New Worlds uses.

As for it costing less, maybe over the long run. But for 1 show it probably would end up costing a lot more.

Some of the scenes for Mando/Boba looked pretty bad too and you could tell.

This does not, in fact, mean it was not (by Hollywood atandards) cheap to make.

It was the first software I ever got to work on professionally, I’m credited as a playtester but I also made an (abortive) attempt to port it to PowerMac. Unfortunately it was an unholy combination of MPW 68K assembly, Pascal, C++, and C, and Apple didn’t actually provide a Pascal compiler for PowerPC and the Language Systems Pascal compiler had a variety of issues with the existing code. And I was trying to both do that and college…

Anyway, yeah, love those Spectre-rear end tanks. :)

It doesn't detract from my enjoyment, but it is noticeably cheap (looking)! Fire looked better in the first season, even when it was obviously CG!

Just binged both seasons, and I wonder a bit about the timeline and evolution of Kepler 22b vs Earth. They both somehow managed to have Neanderthals and humans in the past? Is it supposed to just be an extreme variant of parallel evolution, down to the same religion? Or did the Neanderthals have a space program and hosed off to 22b when humans started taking over?

No, it is panspermia. Kepler 22b seeded Earth and presumably other worlds.

But then it's still some parallell evolution, unless there was a constant exchange of species up until some thousand years ago. If 22b seeded Earth it had to be billions of years in the past.

(I guess all of this could be handwaved away with doing a Battlestar Galactica and saying "It's not actually our Earth", but that's kinda cheating)

Not necessarily. Panspermia separates man from nature in a way the real world doesn't. But that's OK because it is a TV show.

It could be that there is teleological evolution. The show talking about "devolving" would support that take and it is probably the most likely. That's different from parallel evolution though.

Ancient aliens seems to be the most fitting explanation. They abducted neanderthals/human ancestors from Earth hundred of thousands of years ago.

But there are a lot of holes in that theory. Like, Father guessed the age of Grandma to be in the millions IIRC and she looks like a modern day human. I guess modern humans on Earth could be descendents of Kepler refugees and earth hominids intermixing? Our modern appearance would then have originated on Kepler(through genetic manipulation of the abducted Neanderthals?) and then introduced here after Kepler went boom.

They did show earth to have the correct continents and referred to cities like Boston. It would be a strange choice if they were going for a fantasy earth setting.

I have never heard of panspermia referring exclusively to human origins, only to life in general. Do you have an example of this?

Because you need to build a wraparound stage with billions of 1800 nit, 95+ CRI LEDs, get a team to model a whole environment in unreal and train your crew to work with all this stuff. That is not cheaper than a trip to Australia with massive tax incentives.

In a number of years you will probably be able to just hire a stage that's already set up for it, but that's not happening soon.

Trying to make sense of this show is big mistake. In Ridleys Scotts mind it was probably: Neanderthals lived long time ago + Kepler was long time ago = Neanderthals lived on Kepler.
