I don't really agree with slavvy about a ktm being 100% maintenance work in spite of the memes. But you will spend your entire time researching and installing bling and upgrades for it 1000%. A small percent will indeed be puzzling over a fix for something that the Japanese solved 40 years ago with a better design.

Or like.. why KTM would use gaskets and components for the gas cap that warp and degrade when they come in contact with gasoline. Never found a good fix for that one. Wouldn't be a problem but the the bike wheelies constantly so you are always splashing gas out the back.

You just have to accept normal bike stuff like having to weatherproof your speedo with aquarium sealer, replacing rocker arms with every big service, checking the titanium headers for stress fractures when you lube your chain, that kind of thing

Hey now my speedo stayed perfectly dry inside. I just had to fully disassemble it and deep clean every few months because it turns the PCB into powder which then shorts out the exposed contacts inside.

Started working on the $0 TW200 I got. Re-did some mouse-chewed wiring, tossed in a battery, and it cranked right away.

Next step is cleaning the carb and seeing if the fuel tank holds liquids. I was told it has a pinhole leak so I might flapper wheel the seams and hit it with steel stik just to get it watertight. It’s meant to be a woods bike so I care 0% how it looks and I’m not spending $400 on a tank for it.

The stock jetting is fine but I'd stick a shim or two under the needle while you've got the carb out. There's barely anything you can do to the tdub that makes it better, it just winds up wasting money. You can raise the bars up an inch or two with cheap risers without having to modify the wiring. The stock front tire is terrible replace it with a Shinko.

Oil tank return line broke apart. Some silicone part they superseded in 2005. I knew about it and didn't do anything about it. fixed on site with anger.

I forgot that! Man, that's just insult to injury. And FWIW my friend who has one (but doesn't ride it as hard as I did) has none of these issues. Go figure.

And yet they look so goddamned awesome, even stranded by the side of the road.

hmm now were did I leave that plane
Cleaned and properly lubricated a suspect timing advancer.

I have been having a strange random stalling issue where the bike bogs down when I slow down at intersections. It idles but dies when throttle is applied.

Thought it was an electrical issue and scratched my head for a long time when I could not find anything.

After electrical I thought carb but someone suggested the advancer was stuck. And it was not very smooth even when cold so perhaps it was sticking badly when warm.

Hopefully this is a permanent fix.

It will probably get a new tank and new carb just for ease of work. Both tires hold air but need to be replaced - that’s only after the bike is running reliably.

I have some floorboards that might fit you. They came in a box of goldwing parts I got for free. I think they're probably pretty nice, they're huge chunks of cast aluminum. I'll post pics when I can get to them, as I'm not living in the house that I'm paying for right now because... reasons.

On the subject of living with my parents, I fired up my dad's '83 R65 today for the first time in 3 or 4 years. He's 87 and stopped riding a few years ago when his balance went to hell. The R65 started on the first crank with some fresh gas. The idle climbs, so there's probably an air leak. The single disc front brake was awful at first, like one of the two pistons was frozen, but after riding for a while it started to feel like it was grabbing for real. The clutch was frozen, which was a surprise when I first put it in gear. After reading some forums, I took it around the block and jerked the throttle a bunch in first gear, which eventually unstuck it. Then I ran it up by Alice's and down 35.

Next up: replace the battery in my dad's '75 Norton 850 Commando that hasn't been turned over since about 2014. Hopefully the brakes aren't totally frozen in it, but I suspect they are.

the last few seasons ive put stabil in my tank and drained the gas from my carbs before storing them away. now on the first startup of the season i can just put the petcock on prime for a second and have the bikes fire right up.

younger me used to skip these steps and then i’d be pulling and cleaning carbs the first week of the season. lol at that noise. ill do it the easy way now k thx.

Did a fluid change on my XB today. I realized it's been a few years since I did it myself. And then remembered I need the bike vertical to fill the primary fluid, so I made a sketchy use of blocks on my jack.

This jack is really starting to annoy me, and if I weren't considering selling this soon, I'd go get proper track stands.

Also went looking for front brake pads and found that Buell isn't even listed in a few parts books, so thanks, Erik.

I had no idea TB made exhausts for Harleys. The can is Two Brothers as well? Reminds me of the old Tyga "Maggot". That type of exhaust sounds nasty on a lumpy vtwin (in a good way).

Those are old Sporty wheels. Kawasaki (KZ), Yamaha (Maxim), and Honda (GL1100, Shadow 1100 Tourer) all had wheels that look like this but I'm sure they were knocking off Harley. Honda even got sued by Harley over the Tourer:

e: or was it the ACE? I don't remember the details exactly but one main point of contention was the sound of the vtwin.

Yeah the whole system is Two Brothers. And yeah the wheels are just two stock 19” front Sportster mags, the rear has machined block spacers from Trackerdie that bolt up to the wheel and match up with the rear rotor and pulley (sprocket in my case since I threw a chain conversion on too)

Iirc Harley attempted to patent the noise a narrow angle v twin makes and all the other manufacturers teamed up in a class action to get them to gently caress off. In the end they walked away with a patent on 45° twins, so all the metric cruisers are like 50° or similar.

A POOOST!?!??! YEEAAAAHHHH

Installed the Cyclops led bulbs and some doubletake mirrors on my 88 tenere. I was faffing about with getting 2x h4 lights or 2x modern round led lights, but I'll stay h4 and h1, so single bulb in low beam, both in high beam. The h1 high beam only mount bracket needed some adjustments with a Dremel to fit the rounder Cyclops rear end of the bulb.

So of course now the Revolution engines are 60°.

I'll save you the trouble, it's nothing.

The street and rod have zero in common and look like they were made by totally different companies. The rod in general has almost no parts crossover with other Harleys, it's basically switch blocks and brake pads at most, and the engine is more like a miniature car motor (makes sense considering the origin). I've seen a panam in person a few times and if it's got commonality with the street it'll be stuff like ignition coils or sensors cause the actual metal parts are of a vastly higher quality and built with much more modern design and manufacturing techniques in general. The basic component layout is totally different as well.

The real fun of living wisely is that you get to be smug about it.

I haven't had time yet to do anything to the 919 except take a few slightly nicer photos and paw through the bin of spare parts the PO sent.

In the listing he said the tires were the original factory tires - turns out they're actually Metzeler Z8s from 2016. Instead of 18-year-old tires with 12,000 miles they're merely 6-year-old tires with 8,000 miles. :v: He got the bike from a dealer in 2016 and they must have replaced them when they took it as trade-in. (a fun bonus of buying a bike off a message board is you get to read through their post history from when they owned it)
