The issue is super-politicized in the US because US conservative politicians have successfully identified transphobia as a wedge issue. None of the legislation is in good faith. You can tell, by how none of those politicians vote for or support more money for social services and medical care for poor kids that actually saves their lives. They're just suddenly super interested in making laws about medical procedures, you see, because the literally dozens of kids in a given state who might receive gender-affirming medical care are under such terrible danger.

All the kids suffering from homelessness, the high rates of teen suicide, shooting sprees in schools, etc.? Now is Not the Time, apparently.

Consequently, people are rightfully suspicious of anyone who claims to have a "nuanced view" about laws banning doctors and parents from making their own decisions about medical procedures for their kids. The subject is only even under discussion because of a rising tide of trans erasure posturing by republicans inventing culture wars to heroically fight, and these kids are being victimized as a consequence and it's gross as gently caress.

I hope you can forgive TFF chat thread goons for jumping to certain conclusions, given that context.

Actively looking to be agrieved is not worth your effort. I'd think most people here are generally in the same boat so maybe ease off the theatrics of not being able to discuss it.

I think there is worthwhile discussion to be had about compassionately providing gender-affirming care to teens. If only we had specialists working on this around the clock for a living.

Honestly, this is a non-issue in reality—trans folks are a tiny and vulnerable group that deserves a mountain of care and support. They are profoundly susceptible to depression, addiction and suicide. Im far from an expert but I just err on the side of taking care of people. No one is transitioning because it’s cool or fun—it’s almost always a choice between that and suicide.

The debate here in the US is 100% a bad-faith outrage campaign to generate fear and inertia to roll back trans and gay rights.

Anyway, US is full of bad harmful people intent on creating a cis, Christian ethnostate and it bums me the gently caress out.

Also someone throw Chris Rufo down a well and follow it with a load of concrete.

For example of how much this is republicans making a mountain out of a molehill for political gain situation, look at Utah. The governor vetoed the anti-trans athlete bill because it would create a five person panel to inspect the medical records and physical person of exactly one amab girl athlete in the entire state. The other three are afab and, much like Mack Beggs in Texas, they get completely ignored.

The party of no ideas has to create and then attack all these bogeymen to get their base riled up. I think I’m more frustrated over how many people fall for it. Like how many white suburbanites tripped over themselves to decry CRT in schools when it never even existed in the first place. I guess it’s just showing peoples deep down fears, racism, and homophobia.

Trans issues seem so much harder to fight than homosexual issues because trans people are an even smaller minority of the country. A lot of people at least knew someone who was homosexual. Lots of people probably only know of trans people from the caricatures republicans throw at them.

During a breakout session, I asked if he was looking at what happens between cases, because we have that data. He starts talking about he'd love to, that's a pet project of his, and he just got an analyst position approved to help him out. Then he grabs an extra chair, we sit down, and he starts describing in great detail how he needs someone that thinks like that to help him investigate date. About 5 minutes in, I say "Hey, just so we're clear, I'm very interested, my boss knows I'm looking for other jobs, you don't have to be this coy."

Yeah, it's loving insane. Kentucky recently passed a bill that banned trans kids from playing in sports, which prevented a trans girl from playing on the field hockey team that she founded. Like in Utah, she's the only trans student athlete in the state.

It's disgusting and there should consequences for these rear end in a top hat politicians, but I'm definitely feeling negative about that happening.
