Bartees Strange had what I consider the best album of 2020.

He just announced that his second album Farm to Table comes out June 17th.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MpvfTTGwJSc

I'm honestly not really feeling the first single, or at least not the first half, which didn't really sound like a Bartees song at all. It picks up in the end at least. I'm hopeful that this will be a worthwhile followup.

Edit: I just remembered that 2020 was the year of Perfume Genius. Bartees had the 2nd best album of 2020.

The video+song definitely give me strong Mister Mellow-era Washed Out vibes, but this seems to be a one-off as the rest of the album singles that have come out so far seem to be pretty eclectic style-wise and less focused than their previous ones.

It's real hit and miss for me. I've discovered some songs from artists I love, but I ended up not liking the rest of the artist's work. Or, they'll recommend songs to me by artists I love from 10 years ago. Or, remixes of favorite songs of mine, which are rarely good.

Part of it is that my Spotify is hosed because of my love for Sufjan Stevens, Spotify thinks I love sad singer songwriters, but Sufjan is the one and only sad singer songwriter I like. I also create a pop playlist for Pride every June, and that also tends to mess with my recommendations, since I otherwise pretty much just listen to indie rock.

Hello, I waited in this line. It was long as poo poo. I went over for this show and the Snail Mail show the night before at the Riviera and found an AirBNB within a few blocks of both. When I went outside Friday morning there were already a few hundred people in line. By the time I got in line it was a half-hour before doors opened and it went around the entire long-rear end block and about halfway though another. Comic-Con-rear end line. I didn’t get in until right as the opener was starting. I think it took longer because the artist required mask/vax so there was more people at the door checking stuff.

I bought a stupid expensive ticket because I love Sour and the live instrumentation is IMO even better than the album and honestly it was completely worth it. Crowd knew every song except one of the two covers (teenagers in 2022 don’t know Veruca Salt but they sure af know Complicated) and Olivia Rodrigo is an excellent performer. (Also I didn’t know people didn’t like the Aragon the few times I’ve gone I thought it was really pretty and sounded good)

It was sort of funny to compare to the Snail Mail show in a goofus and gallant sort of way. I love Lindsay but you can tell her voice isn’t 100% post-surgery and for whatever reason her sound person kept her mixed super low, to the point where multiple people were going back to the booth and asking them to fix it (with varying levels of politeness). Also she’s not always the most dynamic performer, *and* the crowd felt kinda muted as well. Both artists required mask/vax though, that was a nice thing.

The Anthem is a great venue if you like big venues! My only complaints are the location, which is a little bougie (no good dives nearby, and nothing really seems to stay open till close), and how all purchases require an app. Just about as smooth an operation as a venue can be, though.

Echostage is the lesser big-venue counterpart, imo. Even worse location and definitely poor sightlines.

I still haven't been to the anthem because the location is pretty isolated with getting out after a show. That and yeah big rear end venues like that it has to be something super special or some way I can get there extra early to be close enough to make it seem worth it.

I will always regret that I didn't go to see Grizzly Bear on their final tour one last time though.

You only need the app if you want to open a tab. You can still buy things cashing out everytime.

I did go to that show, I just had no idea it would be their final tour. They were incredible that night, I'm still just really sad that they're done. I listened to Daniel Rosen's new album, and it's fine, it sounds like Grizzly Bear a bit, but it's just not the same.

For what it’s worth he did an interview with stereogum for his new album and didn’t exactly close the door on grizzly bear getting back together. Seems like the ball will be in Ed drostes court tho and he’s the one who left so who knows.

Well, that's the thing isn't it. It's not Grizzly Bear without Ed Droste, and Ed Droste seems done with music. While they were popular enough to tour large venues like The Anthem, they were never popular enough to make them very monetarily successful, which is what frustrated Ed.
