Is there a reason a ton of otome games get localized but no bishoujo games do? While I do appreciate the protagonist being girls in these games, I would much rather date girls over playing as a girl... Basically on my preference list for a dating sim game it's dating girls -> playing as a girl -> playing as a boy -> dating boys I dunno I just find it weird. Maybe I'm weird.

A quick informal survey of what's been released on the Japanese Switch eShop the past few months, which I feel is a good way to assess the non-porn VN market, shows that there might more otome than bishojo romance, but there's still plenty of the latter still around too. Things like this. I feel like it's true almost none of them get localized. My guess is that in the western market most men who'd play anime romance games just want the porn anyway so the PG stuff has virtually no audience.

I've been to yaoicon (a while back) and there was definitely stuff there but not a lot of games. I'm not actually enough into BL to have a good sense of what's available and how it might have changed over time though. I know of a few attempts at localisation that didn't perform to expectations and led to a lot of companies feeling like it was a bad gamble, and I backed at least one kickstarter for a BL game that has pretty much infinitely delayed releasing the promised game, though they made a totally different game and tried to sell it to us for money instead. There's a handful of furry/bara (often both) titles out there. There's at least one english producer making new titles regularly though they tend to be 18+ and at least one of their games got banned off Steam once Steam realised the characters were in high school. The biggest releases I've heard of recently are The Divine Speaker and... something Camp Buddy? ... and both are 18+. But as I said I don't really follow BL, so while I can say that games exist and point you to a few, I don't have a sense of how many there are or whether this is up or down from previous.

Higurashi is straight up a classical mystery in structure for the large part of it, while Umineko is only kind of like a classical mystery and becomes a story that's more about mystery stories, if that makes sense.
