one of our amazing affordable housing wins in the town I used to rent in was getting most everything re-zoned so that the giant unaffordable Victorians could be converted into 2-3 condo units that would each sell for $800k-$1.2M

hooray.

listening in to some single tech workers talking about the houses they offered this last week. the late forties overweight lady wanted a house way out here in the woods so she could build a ropes course in the trees on it. the other person younger appearing LBGTQ was talking about how after not getting this property they would be looking in Hyak.

hyak has a bike trail head bathroom. that’s about all there is to Hyak.

Yeah i only know Amazon/Google/Microsoft/Facebook touchers, if you touch lesser computers i dont think you're buying houses.

Also all of the computer touchers at the above companies get stock options and i know personally at FB/Meta there are BIG packages they give out to absorb you into the Family.

you can definitely buy a house as a lesser computer toucher but it depends on the area/kind of computer touching/seniority. that said, lesser computer touching is full of 50-80k jobs which at this point have been priced out of the market in most places that have those jobs.

i'm a unionized pensioned public employee computertoucher, we even pay better than the private sector these days (for line employees, obviously manager-owners make more in private)

it's like homer simpson, back in the day he was a loser with a beat to poo poo house and poo poo job that barely made ends meet, nowadays his house is an unattainable mansion which is afforded by his single-income almost unheard of unionized private sector job

Coworker and his wife have been putting bids in 20% over asking on $600k+ houses around here and has lost every single house to a buyer paying cash. I'm pretty sure half the houses around here are empty and just sitting in some investment portfolio.

Imagine having the desire and means to own a house and you just can't.

We're all computer touchers making 6 figures! We are supposed to be able to buy houses! It doesn't help that prices literally doubled in the last 7 years though...

We offered on I think five houses in the past six months and were beat every time by an all cash offer, in some cases for lower value than our financed offer

We just had one accepted but only because the owner wanted to sell it to someone who's gonna actually live there

Some of those cash buyers are definitely trying to flip

I touch computers in the healthcare industry around covid people and open hearts. Almost 10 years of experience, 5 figgies nevertheless. I have 1br apartment and I'm just waiting for the day the landlord remembers I'm still here and raises the rent.
