This is SO LONG, but weirdly interesting. Sinfest is apparently one of those things where you actually can break it into clear eras with no overlap, because you can tell just the EXACT days when he gear shifts in his dudebro-feminist-swerf-terf journey, there's no gradual transitions. Also it's pretty funny to watch that thread writer constantly grappling with the fact the author very clearly wants to do metaphorical storytelling, but can't keep his metaphors straight. What are demons meant to represent? What about the fembots? The zombies? He can't decide!

The best analogy from it is where they say that Sinfeset is what happens when a political cartoon ends and like, a large chubby feline with a hat that says "Democratic Porkbarrel Projects" has to go run errands and bumps into his friend, Sixteen Different Parodies of Obama. Ishida occupies the same uncomfortable space for me that incels do, in that I can see them as victims as much as oppressors, even if I can't ever bring myself to excuse or forgive their dumbass poo poo.

Skwirl posted:Yeah, these people don't have drunken debates in bars about bullshit, so don't know how to actually talk with someone in person who has a completely different opinion than you. They just have talking points, which works great when you're a talking head on tv with a sympathetic host, or when you're writing op-eds for the Federalist or whatever, but don't work when you're talking with someone actually trying to engage you. They do this on purpose. There's that one quote about anti-semites; they don't actually care about the content of their arguments, and they know it, all they care about is having an audience and someone dumb enough to give it to them. Their opponents believe in words, which they find hilarious, and when it stops being fun they'll indicate by some lofty gesture the time for debate is past.

Vaush basically spends his time debating alt-righters and incels, explicitly to try and de-radicalise their audience. He's capable of some good well-reasoned takes, and his non-debate videos with people he likes are cool and wholesome. He's also a massive debate-bro edge lord who will troll you with absurd hypotheticals, and devil's-advocate you with ridiculous claims and then call you a loving moron for 20 minutes. And he's the living embodiment of twitter drama - as all you tubers are.

That is a great thread! I've never read Sinfest but it was one of those things that always popped up on many places in the early 2000s. Some of those early strips are cringy now, but I'd wager the average SA humor was even worse in those days. Then the world changed and Sinfest doubled down. And also lol Twitter is the worst possible medium for long form writing it's amazing how people do those mega threads. ThreadReader makes it nice tho.

Is there someone else with a V name I've gotten him mixed up with?

As others have expressed, it's weird being someone who did read a bit of Sinfest back in "the day"; it was always kinda around the periphery of the "You're into webcomics" community; it'd pop up, you'd read a few, then forget about it until the next time. The weird thing to me is now easily it slots into these different eras, as someone upthread said; there's a very specific "I was going for syndication" era, then an "I'm trying to do more earnest, human stories" era, then just the standard nofap pipeline of Nofap to SWERF to TERF to "(((JEWS))) are running the world" lizard people conspiracy.

It freaks me out that I was into webcomics, to the point I briefly tried starting one before abandoning that notion entirely. Then I casually followed them as bookmarks. Subsequently I lost the bookmarks over the course of several years and moves and new computers, and I stopped following them. Several times, years apart, I briefly remembered them and checked them out again. But the last time I did *that* was many many years ago. AND SOME OF THEM ARE STILL GOING DAILY SINCE THAT TIME

Sinfest was funny like that in that it had above-average art (considering how low the bar was in the 00s) and a regular update schedule (again, low bar) but never really gained a foothold of influence the way a lot of comics did, even niche holdouts like Freefall or Schlock Mercenary, or a bunch of quiet furry comics they have April Fools crossovers with. I get the feeling the author wasn't good at making friends the way the others were, even back in the day. Apparently he's been at it since the 90s? On rereading or even someone else's rereading it's easy to see why, it was too edgy for syndication (and really, syndication was already a pipe dream if you weren't a boomer) and never really found a consistent voice otherwise until it went full transphobic screed.

I disagree with the last point; his consistent voice definitely started with his NoFap "Men are evil, women are chaste and pure, porn is violence" bullshit. Men are 100% perpetrators of violence in Tatty's world. Slick is depicted as addicted to porn, unable to free himself from his nature, much like the proverbial scorpion. Then look at the only lesbian relationship in his work: It's all hand holding and cuddling and being cute. To the point that the only woman with any sexual agency in the comic is a literal devil who's entire plotline has been pushed to the side to make room for more comments about how sex is bad and icky and gross. Splicer posted:Part of why I never frequently read (past tense) sinfest was because the art may be technically good but it's always been incredibly bland and lifeless. I'm not even sure I twigged that people posting sinfest comics were all posting the same comic. NGL when people first started posting Sinfest I thought Bloom County had started again.

Hilariously, when the live action Bebop did finally materialize....it was just like firefly and fell super flat.
