It's such a weird circumstance because by all rights she should be disqualified because she's now a felon. But since no actual consequences have happened for all that poo poo there's an actual arguement of "if I did the things I am disqualified for then why am I not in jail". Maybe there shouldn't be near diplomatic immunity for elected officials.

so i've been seeing a lot of cons argue that the reason many other industrialized countries have such good social safety nets and overall better quality of life is because they can afford to spend their budgets on those things as opposed to their militaries because amurka does all their protecting for them. this isn't a new talking point, but i've been hearing it a whole lot more recently than in prior years. the only POSSIBLE country where this seems like it might make sense that i can think of off the top of my head is MAYBE japan, but that's about it. this sounds like a very dumb argument but i figured i'd do my due diligence and ask if there's anything to it.

Well, as Eisenhower said:

quote:

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities. It is two electric power plants, each serving a town of 60,000 population. It is two fine, fully equipped hospitals. It is some fifty miles of concrete pavement. We pay for a single fighter with a half-million bushels of wheat. We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8,000 people. . . . This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron."

But of course, no conservative is *actually* advocating cutting the military budget. They would just rather use the military to invade random countries rather than trying to secure 'world peace' or any hippie bullshit like that they think is being done.

We arent doing them because we dont value those things and there is almost no conception of a greater good or social contract in this country. Military budget is irrelevant because our cobbled together alternatives with 37 layers of bureaucracy and means testing and middle men aplenty actually cost MORE than just doing the thing directly, and this isnt limited to healthcare.

We arent lacking the money we just do not value human life as a matter of policy and the people who get to decide everything or get elevated to any approved ideology's commentariat would shoot their own mother for a buck.

Also for a bit longer we are the worlds reserve currency, we could in fact just print more. We do it all the time! Just only for stuff DC wants, which isnt de-commodification of healthcare or anything else

Meanwhile in my experiences I've seen conservatives claim the reason countries like Sweden and Japan can afford to have such social safety nets is because of how "homogeneous" their populations are. Which allows for convenient segueing into far-right rhetoric of "hey white people we could totally have better health care if only the Jews didn't flood our cities with the brown hordes."

I think it's an indication that simply exalting the existing US health care system is bringing diminishing returns, so excuses have to be made as to why the system can't be replaced. Just going "socialized medicine AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA" isn't cutting it.

This also reminds me how during the 2000s it was a regular theme among conservatives that Scandinavian countries were "socialist" and therefore bad. Lots of liberals in turn began to be like "oh yeah well socialism sounds pretty cool in that case, hooray better health care!" In response, conservatives changed their messaging to "haha silly liberals, Scandinavian countries aren't socialist, what could possibly make you think that? In fact, they have freer markets than our own!"

The response to this should be, :smug: "So you care more about some sissy foreigners too lazy to protect themselves rather then taking care of Americans here?" Everything is a zero sum game to them, we can't treat undocumented people with dignity every time you do that some homeless veteran starves to death. We cant have bail reform because every black man released without bail will beeline to the nearest white boomer and rob him on the spot. And so on.

What happened during the Civil War did prophecy the future military-industrial complex, but it it was evanescent. It's like how we used to have a Secretary of the Navy, because the Navy keeps invading armies off of North America, and a Secretary of War, who only has things to do when we're at war with some assholes.

Japanese safety net isn't even very good. It's basically what if the US had a public option for health insurance, the welfare state hadn't been gutted, and deregulation/finance hadn't eaten everything. Much better than America, but not deserving of being in the same sentence as Sweden.

I knew a Swede for a while who'd never shut up about how backward Japan was in comparison to Sweden, and I had to break it to her that I had moved to Japan, in part, because things were much better here than in the US. Sure, if I had my pick it would have been nice to gently caress off somewhere else, but I happened to be able to be a native English speaker that could speak and read Japanese so it was much easier to move to Japan than anywhere else.

Which is hilarious because if we had the same kind of cultural settings that allowed for cheaper social safety nets like healthcare in east asia then these guys would be crying about being bullied.

Oh, someone just walked up to you and told you that you're fat and ugly, and that you are dragging the net down by being fat, ugly, and expensive as a result.
