I hope Mattea keeps going just so Ken has to keep coming out with a monologue of random facts about whatever number of wins she has. Last night was hysterical, he just kept going on about number 16.

Or contestants got weirdly comfortable adding nonstop interruptions to the game.

Mattea's a great person and I hope she keeps winning. I also hope someone takes her aside to say to stop going on for 20 seconds after giving a correct response to something, or talking through all of the remaining time for the other contestants to ring in after an incorrect one who seem to be waiting for the cue of silence that they're able to do so (which particularly bugs me since it seems dangerously close to being against the rules and like it's inevitably going to be exploited by the next James as a strategy to reduce other contestants picking up a clue they flubbed).

They aren't mutually exclusive concepts unless you're a goon taking valid criticism of behavior that is not normal for this show and calling it a personal attack on someone.

Again, I point you in the direction of Amy as the prime example of how you can be a superchamp, have a great personality and be really fun, and yet not do this poo poo.

I like her but I agree that talking after missing a clue--a time when other contestants are possibly still thinking about the question and/or waiting for the silence cue to ring in--is really bad. I don't think she's doing it intentionally since it fits her style.

You look good.
Yesterday would have been a great time for her to bet it all on FJ. If she bets any amount and gets it wrong, she loses and wins either 1,000 or 2,000 dollars. The difference between those two is nothing compared to the $320K she's already won. But if she gets it right, that's an additional $27,200 and she looks even cooler.

Also, I think it's probably easier trying to come up with the correct response when someone next to you is rambling on about the why they gave the wrong answer.

She'd never do something like that, way too risk averse. I think we've seen her wager everything....just a couple of times? (not counting when she finds the first DD on the second clue like yetserday)

Counterpoint: A lot of those times I've had the answer on the tip of my tongue and her rambling was incredibly distracting and I didn't come up with it in time. I can't imagine it's easier if you're at a podium under pressure trying to do it.

But it's the exact same risk as betting $1, in this case. If she gets it wrong, she loses, no matter what she wagered (unless it was $0).

Oh I 100% agree with you, but I'm rational to a fault and bad wagering drives me apeshit. But risk-averse contestants don't see that and only see "avoid losing these digits on the scoreboard".

Though I'd amend that: She does need to take third place into account and wager to still beat her if she gets it wrong and 2nd place gets it wrong. Otherwise yeah your fate is 100% controlled by your response if 2nd place gets it right so wagering anything over $1 is identical to wagering $1 if you get it wrong and he gets it right.

Yeah I guess I didn't consider the possibility that she can still win if both her and 2nd place get it wrong. And there's the risk that the 2nd place player bets stupidly where they get it right but didn't bet enough.

I was joking about this. I don't think she's doing it as strategy, but it's got to be working to her advantage. Like a cousin to jumping around the board and saying a short version of the the category and saying it over the host to keep the other players off balance.

That's when you can end up going around in circles though, if you try to wager around the opponent doing something dumb and try to metagame it. Best you can do is wager enough so if you both get it wrong but 3rd place doubles up (they shouldn't wager that much though, since their only shot is both of you getting it wrong and killing yourselves with high wagers, they're playing for 2nd place) you're still in the lead.

I think the reason bad wagering bugs me is I love this part of the game where a good strategy can really make or break you, but that's the poker player in me talking.

Poque

=^-^=
It was $27,200 - $13,600 - $8,400. If I'm Mattea (and am not just looking for the highest floor of cash, which is a $1 bet) I probably wager $10,399 to lock out third place and still win since second place is almost certainly gonna wager it all.

100% agree with this, I don't think she's doing it intentionally but it's still disrespectful to the other contestants. I don't care if she wants to babble for 30 seconds when deciding on her DD wagers though, so long as it doesn't impact clues left on the board

Exactly. This is why I put it on the people running the show. It's on them to provide appropriate corrective feedback.

But maybe they're trying and she's ignoring it, we can never know

It's also not just her, I want to add. It's been a general trend in their being way more lax with contestant chatter. Some in here have also noted their allowing shout-outs in Final. The way they're running the show seems to have become more lax, whether that's intended or just something that developed as a result of all the staff shuffle chaos.

there's no guarantee that second place will get the answer right (meaning a $1 wager would win in a wrong/wrong scenario) and there's also no guarantee that second place will bet it all (even though it's obviously correct). So the $1 hedges against both a wagering and answering mistake while still allowing an outright guaranteed win if Mattea gets it correct. People make wildly incorrect errors in FJ wagering all the time but this wasn't one of them.

(also to pre-empt "well why $1 and not $0", because final jeopardy correctness is correlated between players)
