Tokyo Vice was good but not great. Some of the acting is really good (Watanabe, Sugata, Kasamatsu) but the main character is really boring and his the whole subplot with the escort girls is just not that interesting. The show is apparently based on real events so they had some constraints with the plot but it's just not a gripping crime drama in the style of Michal Mann. It's more about expats living in Tokyo that occasionally come into contact with criminals.

makes me want to re-watch Giri/Haji, which is also, in broad strokes, a crime drama that has to do with cultural differences between Japan and "the West" (in this case the UK specifically).

Pretty much agree with this on the characters and subplot. Maybe they know they’re getting more seasons, because otherwise the beginning and ending seem odd. The very beginning seems odd either way.

I know someone who was sold an android powered device by some kind of "friend of a friend has the hookup" situation. It plugs to their TV and has a bunch of apps on it that essentially seek out all the pirate sites that exist and compile the newest movies and shows into one place. They booted it up and showed me it, and it pretty much let them watch anything using those kinds of sites, but its all in a nice easy to use interface. Once you're in the apps looks like a legit streaming service, with a bunch of movie posters and descriptions, essentially, but it has literally anything that's out there.

I have a feeling that's going to be this generation's version of an illegal cable box/hookup for older/less technological people that don't know that you can just kinda find that same content on the internet yourself if you know where to look.

Stremio is super easy, free, no ads, has everything. Total lifesaver for me since i cancelled hbo and netflix.

10 years ago I said I would never buy digital only media. I was all about digital copies that came with Blu-Rays, but the idea of buying ONLY a digital copy was just abhorrent to me.

Nowadays, if I can't stream it or buy the digital copy, it's dead to me. God forbid I have to put a Blu-Ray in my PS5 or even worse, the only way it's available is DVD. *shudder*

Finished Raised By Wolves S2.

I didn’t hate it like I feared based on what people were saying about it, but it’s far from my favorite. It’s certainly a show that’s not afraid to surprise you, but it does feel like they’re just making stuff up as they go along. Calling it “science fiction” is a complete misnomer. This is 100% fantasy except the wizards are called “androids” and magic is “dark photons” or whatever.

I think my biggest issue is that I don’t like most of the characters. Campion is such a dweeb, most of the other kids are Whatever, Marcus can be pretty obnoxious… and the ones I liked are getting killed off, like Sue and the robot girl (also holy poo poo!). Father is still my favorite and Mother when she’s not ruining everything.

This season also had some seriously dodgy effects at times, which I assume was either a time or money crunch due to a bigger scope than S1.

I suppose S3 is a ways off so I’ll probably be in the mood to watch it, but it’s kind of a hard show to recommend to people.

I think I heard him crack some jokes once either in the first season or his first special for Shudder but that's it, and I don't really care, anyways. He seems like a decent guy, so what if the 70-year-old white guy on TV doesn't have perfect politics. He's the only reason I keep Shudder.

Me and the wife are so loving mad at this. Yes I know real life rich people get away with heinous poo poo, but it's not like the rest of the show was true to life, and I don't generally watch these kinds of shows that provide zero catharsis. I see enough of that every day.

For fairness, I'll give the weak backup that when Briggs was interviewed for Last Podcast on the Left awhile back to talk about the Shudder show he started to wander off on a "Yeah, you just can't make a good horror movie anymore. All these drat snowflakes today..." before the hosts kind of pulled him back. I'd say it was more old and grumpy than bad though. If they'd like him go on I think it was just going to be a regular dumb You Couldn't Make Blazing Saddles point.

It’s mostly this.

At one point he was a regular contributor to Taki’s Magazine, a libertarian op-ed rag that has in the past published articles that endorsed neo-nazi groups abroad. Joe Bob’s stuff was relatively tame by the magazine’s standards, mostly “old man yells at pronoun” and “you can’t make those jokes anymore” garbage, but the association does call into question why he ever contributed to it in the first place.

A Reddit post called this out a few years ago and he stopped contributing not long after, but
