And it's frustrating, because as others have pointed out, the Borg generally had red lasers.

Quite famously, Locutus.

Picard's one minute scene actually talking to her was good, but not worth all the bullshit it took to get there, nor everything that came about as a result of it. The timeline trigger definitely needed to be something not connected to Picard to avoid the Discovery problem of "Michael Burnham Jean-Luc Picard is the most important person in the entire universe."

I mean, from a casual observer, wouldn't JLP be the most important person in the entire universe?

How big/expensive would Locutus's laser have been, had they tried to make it green at the time BoBW was shot? I'm picturing Patrick Stewart with what looks like another head resting on his shoulder.

You need different laser colors so you know who the bad ones are. Knowing is half the battle.

Whatever the case may be, green lasers are cheap as hell now. And they're a lot more visible (and thus you need less obscuring fog) than red lasers.

By this I mean they used green lasers entirely because it was the cheapest thing they could do.

We haven't had that spirit here since 1969.

I have a green laser pointer. I'm an amateur astronomer, and it's wonderful for pointing out stuff in the night sky to other people. Instead of "okay, you see those three kinda bright stars that make a bent line, look below and a little to the left of those", you just point the laser and say "right THERE".

So yeah, green lasers are awesome. But it also kind of really sucks that green lasers have gotten so common and cheap, because you can very quickly do serious damage to someone's eyes with one. If you accidentally shine an ordinary red play-with-the-cat laser pointer at someone's eye, their blink reflex will almost certainly kick in before it does any real damage. That's not the case with a green laser. And also, if you're pointing one at the sky, be extremely sure that you won't accidentally hit an aircraft. That can have... consequences. Like "years in prison" consequences.

I was actually trying to think of a gift to get a friend of mine who is an amateur astronomer as well, and this seems like a good one. How powerful does one need for star-pointing?

Even a low-power green laser will do the job, and the average $20 version you can get on amazon is more than good enough. It's a more visible beam because its higher energy (and thus shorter wavelength) means it will scatter more easily on the molecular scale of atmospheric gasses. That, and using it with a dark background, makes the use of our visual system's high sensitivity to green light even more effective, so even something relatively ethereal in concentration stands out brightly.

It doesn't take much. 5 milliwatts at 532 nm (AKA "green") is plenty for ordinary astronomical usage. Mine runs on two AAA cells, the label says it has "Power output < 5 mW" and the beam is very easily visible in my far-from-ideal suburban skies, even with all the neighbors' porch lights on. Remember the Borg beams from this week's episode? Yeah, it looks exactly like that, except pointed at stars instead of protagonists. You can always go for higher power for MOAR BRIGHTER LAZOR, but it's really not necessary.

For recommendations of specific models, or the best place to buy one, ask the amateur astronomy thread; they'll have much more up-to-date info than I will.

And all this is reminding me that I haven't taken my drat telescope out in way too long.

It looked a lot like the aerial shots from the chase scene at the beginning of Disco S4 E1. That was awful and used darkness to try and cover up how bad it looks too. Wouldn't be surprised if it was the same team that did both.

I really don't get the whole combat hologram thing like at the bare minimum generate a dude who already has a sword. I get you're not going to project blood clots into the Intruders brains for story reasons (or bees) but having your combat hologram have to look for a weapon is dumb and weird.

Also everyone had lasers pointed on them all the time sure lucky that the special Borg forces can't pull a trigger

Yeah in the last episode Picard and Elron encountered a Tellarite ship captain who they think is engaged in an alien slave trade, but soon discover he's actually helping people escape a repressive local regime. How they balance the Prime Directive against their own ethical beliefs is really clever and they even give Elron a few really cool moments in dealing with the Ferengi who show up in act 2.
