I'm thinking it was directed panspermia. My personal theory is that humans originated on Kepler and were at some point visited by Sol (going along with the whole Garden of Eden imagery), who taught humans how to build the androids - a part of its reproductive cycle, necessary to gestate its young - and then started turning them into produce for its young via the seeds of life and the resultant brain fruit. The still-free humans rebelled, causing a massive war, and at some point Grandmother was reprogrammed with the vague directive of "preserving everlasting human life." She did this both via panspermia and by devolving the remaining humans on Kepler to prevent Sol from being able to influence them meaningfully and prevent more androids being built, leaving it alive but unable to reproduce. After millions of years, Sol somehow managed to reach out through space to Earth to gift the blueprints for androids and attempt to influence the evolved humans to travel back to Kepler so it could start to reproduce again.

Either the scriptures Sol sent to Earth took until modern times to be deciphered and the blueprints for the Necromancers to be found, or Sol's scriptures arrived on Earth late into modern history as a divine revelation to whoever the Mithraic founder was, and the subsequent decoding of their writings led to the discovery of the Necromancers. I think either are plausible, but they don't really make it clear what's more likely.

I always imagined, if this is supposed to be our future and not an alternate history, people in our future discover ancient texts somewhere on Earth, Dead Sea Scroll style, and when it turns out to have a bunch of complex technology encoded in it somehow, it kick-starts a pretty understandable new religion that has a solid claim to being actually divinely inspired.

I really enjoyed that the people in this show would say "I don't believe in Sol" and then hear a voice in their head and be like "ok, well, that voice is undeniably real and having an effect on my environment...I guess I believe in Sol?" Like if somebody marched around my town 7 times and blew a horn and all the buildings fell down I am going to become a believer in their God(s).

Sol has to be some sort of intelligence that knows exactly how to tickle the part of humans' brains that goes "this is God" and just keeps doing it over and over and over ... It doesn't matter if you're an atheist, a kid, or a robot, there's basically no way to avoid Sol's fuckery.

Yeah, but she said she did think it was powerful, and would do whatever it wanted without question if it saved her son. I think it's making a poijy about atheism vs belief, in the sense that you can still be believer in all but name. Atheism is a rejection of blind faith in a higher power, not a rejection of the word "god". I reckon it ties into the idea of searching for knowledge vs the pleasurable certainty that you already have thst knowledge, something the finale grapples with explicitly in text.

if your god is so weak to need to use tech and tools to get their godly image going and also you could theoretically get better tech than them, or possibly just fuckin kill them or even just take advantage of its limitations. if god is just some friggin pervert with some fancy tech, people are not gonna wanna put faith in it the same way. imagine the audacity of some galactic middle manager trying to pull bullshit like send himself/son to be killed to show off your resurrection tech and then have the gall to tell everyone you forgive them. i guess not all religions have the same kind of calvinball god like christians do, but sol is def in that style. I think the difference is massive. A god is something you can't do much about, you try to avoid it's wrath and collateral damage as bets you can. A super alien is still physical matter that can be hosed with, you can launch it's rear end to a star or a blackhole and wreck it's existence. An alien is a conquerable oppressor humans are obligated to overcome, a god is not*. *depending on the rules of magic in your universe
