Just binged both seasons, and I wonder a bit about the timeline and evolution of Kepler 22b vs Earth. They both somehow managed to have Neanderthals and humans in the past? Is it supposed to just be an extreme variant of parallel evolution, down to the same religion? Or did the Neanderthals have a space program and hosed off to 22b when humans started taking over?

I'm thinking it was directed panspermia. My personal theory is that humans originated on Kepler and were at some point visited by Sol (going along with the whole Garden of Eden imagery), who taught humans how to build the androids - a part of its reproductive cycle, necessary to gestate its young - and then started turning them into produce for its young via the seeds of life and the resultant brain fruit. The still-free humans rebelled, causing a massive war, and at some point Grandmother was reprogrammed with the vague directive of "preserving everlasting human life." She did this both via panspermia and by devolving the remaining humans on Kepler to prevent Sol from being able to influence them meaningfully and prevent more androids being built, leaving it alive but unable to reproduce. After millions of years, Sol somehow managed to reach out through space to Earth to gift the blueprints for androids and attempt to influence the evolved humans to travel back to Kepler so it could start to reproduce again.

Nah, they were modern inventions. Either the scriptures Sol sent to Earth took until modern times to be deciphered and the blueprints for the Necromancers to be found, or Sol's scriptures arrived on Earth late into modern history as a divine revelation to whoever the Mithraic founder was, and the subsequent decoding of their writings led to the discovery of the Necromancers. I think either are plausible, but they don't really make it clear what's more likely.

I thought there was some implication that the Mithraic texts were ancient, but I'm not confident that they actually said that now that I think about it.

I always imagined, if this is supposed to be our future and not an alternate history, people in our future discover ancient texts somewhere on Earth, Dead Sea Scroll style, and when it turns out to have a bunch of complex technology encoded in it somehow, it kick-starts a pretty understandable new religion that has a solid claim to being actually divinely inspired.

Yeah. I really enjoyed that the people in this show would say "I don't believe in Sol" and then hear a voice in their head and be like "ok, well, that voice is undeniably real and having an effect on my environment...I guess I believe in Sol?"

Like if somebody marched around my town 7 times and blew a horn and all the buildings fell down I am going to become a believer in their God(s).

Was Sue really a “believer” though? She believed in the existence of Sol, sure, it had been demonstrated to her, but she very specifically called out that she didn’t believe Sol was a god.

Im not 100% sure but I think its said the texts were received by someone in a revelation (so Sol talking in their head)

Yeah, but she said she did think it was powerful, and would do whatever it wanted without question if it saved her son.

I think it's making a poijy about atheism vs belief, in the sense that you can still be believer in all but name. Atheism is a rejection of blind faith in a higher power, not a rejection of the word "god".

I reckon it ties into the idea of searching for knowledge vs the pleasurable certainty that you already have thst knowledge, something the finale grapples with explicitly in text.

if your god is so weak to need to use tech and tools to get their godly image going and also you could theoretically get better tech than them, or possibly just fuckin kill them or even just take advantage of its limitations. if god is just some friggin pervert with some fancy tech, people are not gonna wanna put faith in it the same way. imagine the audacity of some galactic middle manager trying to pull bullshit like send himself/son to be killed to show off your resurrection tech and then have the gall to tell everyone you forgive them. i guess not all religions have the same kind of calvinball god like christians do, but sol is def in that style. I think the difference is massive.

A god is something you can't do much about, you try to avoid it's wrath and collateral damage as bets you can.

A super alien is still physical matter that can be hosed with, you can launch it's rear end to a star or a blackhole and wreck it's existence. An alien is a conquerable oppressor humans are obligated to overcome, a god is not*.

Yeah, but have you considered that maybe a god could be good? Like, maybe this thing wants to help out. Maybe it's a Posadist all powerful alien that has perfected socialism and just wants to help alleviate suffering. Or else it wants to advance [thing you value], and it actually has the power to do it. You might find yourself willing and even eager to help out such a powerful benevolent being.

Not saying that's what Sol's deal is, but Sol's worshippers seem to think along those lines. And in practical terms that's what the Trust was too.

The theology in this show is almost cartoonishly simple, but still manages to be pretty interesting.

Yeah, I reckon if a god were actually straight with me or us about things, and we could know it's motivations, means, and goals, like, if they align with mine, yeah I'm not looking for personal power but the best means for my agendas to be advanced. So be it if some crazy alien out there (or crazy AI) is leading the charge, but I need that transparency to have that kind of faith and loyalty, and I'm still going to be actively hostile to any forced hierarchy and every instance of people using the faith organization or power structures to their own selfish ends, nor showing any deference to certain tiers of clergy or whatever. We all work for the alien, fuckin walk your rear end like the rest of us.

I find it harder to rally behind a god that doesn't have a "real" explanation, hinging entirely upon gaps in scientific or biological understanding. The god I was raised to believe in was spectacularly pointless, and they had basically no good answers or ideas about any of the whys of God. if i knew god just needed psychic worship energy to power his cosmic generators for a neighborhood of cosmic god beings or whatever, i'd be more inclined to think about devoting my worship to it. as it stands he just seems like a really manipulative creep and control freak for no real reason, especially if it's as powerful as it says it is.

I have never heard of panspermia referring exclusively to human origins, only to life in general. Do you have an example of this?

It used to be so common that the editor of one of the big magazines (Amazing Tales, I want to say) would reject "Adam & Eve" stories because even in the infancy of science fiction it was so ubiquitous as to be hackneyed. TV Tropes predictably has tons of examples but notes, "One variation is that that's how we got to Earth, and the origin planet of humanity is somewhere else. This has become less common, however, as evidence that we're biologically related to other Earth species has become pretty hard to talk your way around." But I don't think Raised by Wolves is particularly concerned with "real" science and exists more in a fantasy space where that kind of thing could totally happen.
