KartooshFace, you are not responding efficiently!

Thanks for all the book recs, my Kindle is now bulging (mostly with samples, I'm not made of airports). Started with the one Guav recommended (as a fellow knower of the Horny Rabbit book, I trust your taste) - nice change from accurate, in-depth analysis of why everything is broken :)

Enjoy :)

I think the second book far more than the first has a twist ending which is very much in line with 'things this thread would appreciate' but I won't spoil anything.

loving hell the papers really are all dogshit aren't they?

Parents are down for the weekend, and after a brief discussion of the problems with them reading the Mail (and pointing out the insidious transphobia in the article mam showed us) they've asked for an alternative and I'll be honest, I'm absolutely stumped.

The Mirror possibly, but all of the articles are clickbaity trash and still have a vaguely angry, tabloid feel. The i & independant require subs up front. Guardian is transphobic lib trash (first article I tried literally blamed the tories winning on Corbyn) and has already been ruled out for being 'too high brow anyway.' Wish there was a channel 4 news app or something relatively neutral. Even the BBC News app is dogshit though at least it would be a step sideways from the Mail.

Got to come up with something to recommend or they'll slip back to using the Mail. Bear in mind they are older and will not want RSS or anything complex - neither of them are particularly tech savvy.

If you get the All 4 app you can get C4 News on it. https://www.channel4.com/programmes/channel-4-news
You can read a fair bit of the Independent for free, just the premium articles you can't.

At least you've raised awareness with them so maybe a couple of decent blogs to add to their reading matter. If they have topics of particular interest, maybe suggest that they read a few different sources?

Sky News is less poo poo than some - maybe that app to add to their repertoire?

Maybe you could check out this one for a couple of weeks and see how it is? https://leftfootforward.org/ I know nothing about it.*

Oh and this one whose name I keep forgetting! https://thewordmedia.org/ (ditto I haven't read it for a couple of years so no idea what its stance is on various issues other than generally 'socialist').*
It was also a paper paper but they had continual problems with distribution (as in WH Smiths I think refusing to stock it or something like that, so I don't know it if it still available in paper form).

Newsline: haven't seen that for literally DECADES! I didn't know it was still going!

*Ed:
I looked up transphobia in both leftfootforward and the word. Couldn't see anything in The Word, but LFF seems to be pro-trans rights (NB I haven't read any of this in depth so stand to be corrected!)

I'd go with Mirror or BBC personally, given what you wrote.

There's also Reuters and such but it's probably too high-brow as well and kindof boring besides.

FT?

My God, it's full of Horatios!

FT is honest, but its priorities are (understandably) economic and financial not political.

The good of this is that it doesn’t report on all the trivial distracting poo poo that makes up a lot of the media discourse in the UK, the bad is that it isn’t particularly interested in social journalism because that doesn’t move markets. Also the perspective is quite firmly international not really UK, so it tends to have quite a strong London bias.

(It’s my go to paper, but then usually I’m not in the UK).

FT is also £55 per month subscription, which is probably chicken feed if you are some North London Liberal, but well out of the range for the ordinary working man.

Exploration is ill-advised.
The hard answer is that you genuinely can't trust any single media platform and need to simply develop media literacy, and healthy skepticism towards mainstream narratives without doing full conspiracy theorist. (which is just uncritically consuming a different bunch of media)

Somewhat related, a big problem with a lot of legacy leftist media is how a lot of it is motivated by contrarianism and taking fringe positions for the sake of it rather than actual belief or consistent ideology. See a lot of 'post-left' types who if they ever actually were leftist usually only did so because it was edgy and weird, and pivoted to something else (usually fascism) when people started being leftist unironically.

Politely explained I could never vote for a party with Johnson as leader or a policy like Rwanda. No point in admitting I'd never vote for them regardless, less likely to take the feedback on board.
