It was Swan Princess (1994) I was thinking of but supposedly 2009's The Princess and the Frog and 2011's Winnie the Pooh were fully hand-animated

I never got around to watching either, but I'm watching Princess and the Frog right now

The very first scene has glowy things floating around that there's no fuckin' way were traditionally animated. Then even if I believed the rest of the opening scene was hand-animated there's no way I'd ever believe the page turn at juuuust before 2 minutes in was animated by hand

Sticking with Swan Princess 1994 as the last fully hand-animated feature film (and it's not Disney)

Disney Animation was kind of rudderless when Walt died, but the biggest issue the animation dept had was being All Hands On Deck for a production release every 4-5 years. There just wasn't much ability to innovate when you're locked in like that, and it's likely that which led to Bluth taking a chunk of animators with him.

At one point, Disney Animation had Brad Bird, John Lasseter, and Tim Burton on its staff and they were all chased out for various reasons.

Anyway, The Black Cauldron was such a miss that it would have destroyed Disney Animation if not for Roy E. Disney stepping in and saying he would take over the division. This was after the Animation dept had been unceremoniously moved off the burbank lot into warehouses in Glendale.

He got The Great Mouse Detective out, which wasn't amazing but did well enough to keep a bunch of people employed. This is when the execs decided to ramp up production to an animated feature every year or two, leading to a pitch meeting that gave rise to the concepts for Oliver and Company and The Little Mermaid (which was put on the backburner because it was too similar in concept to the recently released Splash).

Oliver and Company gave the Animation dept a little shot in the arm. Probably gave the suits confidence to go through with Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Since Richard Williams didn't want to uproot to the US, abunch of animators went to his studio to work, and I'm certain they walked away with a but more education as a result. If Oliver was the financial success the bottom line needed, Roger Rabbit was exactly the kind of artistic and technical challenge the animation department needed after years of doubt and stagnation. It reinvigorated interest in golden era animation in the public, probably prompted a genuine demand for animated features in general, and paved the way for the Little Mermaid and all it would bring.

But yeah... amazingly a company built on the novelty of feature length animated film came crazy close to just outsourcing their legacy product. Lol.

Well, no one's watched Sandman, it's not out yet. Which is the other problem with his statement, we've only had the barest of previews, so even if it was somehow more woke than the comic, you wouldn't actually know it yet.

I mean yeah, in general I think as a society we have had a lot of shift leftward, because that's what happens in broad terms, it's what makes progressives progressive. The right has also moved really right at the same time, and the vocal end of the right has also moved pretty loving far right. But like when Maher complained that he used to be left wing and then the left moved on and he didn't change, that's not a condemnation of the left, it's a condemnation of himself.
