I liked that Disco Elysium presents nationalist dialogue choices with real dogwhistle language about "foreigners" and "honest hard working people"; I rode along for a friend's playthrough and it was fun explaining why the game was taking him aside to say "hey seems like you're really into fascism."

To be fair to my buddy it took him a very long time to realize that he didn't have to fully exhaust every dialogue tree

Lincoln has some brutal combat animations. Stabbing racists while dressed like Jimi Hendrix never wore out its welcome.

The correct answer is to punch the Racist Lorry Driver in the face. It makes the drugs sidequest harder, but it's worth it.

I don't think there's no place to have 'here's a rapist, beat his rear end' in a game, but there are times when that definitely just breaks the tone of the game around it.

I never found that about Fallout, and I haven't played Discus Elevator yet, but weirdly, at-relaunch FFXIV did it a lot. Either every single writer thought they were the only one implying rape in a background detail and didn't check each others' work until launch, or someone was just really into writing that, and is thankfully no longer doing so.

It's mostly off in sidequests--I know the postmoogle quests have one of the most stark ones, and the point where a merchant harasses a poor migrant in Ul'Dah has one of the only MSQ mentions.

I gotta give props to the DE team for putting so much drat thought into making the physique skills actually interesting. In any other roleplaying game it would be just about hitting stuff but in DE it's also your self-preservation/paranoia, your predilection for addictive substances and activities, your attunement to the city itself. Shivers alone makes investing in Phys worthwhile. When it came time to do the field autopsy on the body, having Shivers' other voice chime in to confirm my suspicion that something was amiss about the cause of death was incredible

There's a thought cabinet you can get that allows you to level shivers to 6 without good Phys, I usually use that instead of investing in Phys normally. Though it is nice to be able to do the sick-rear end 360 spin kick against measurehead.

I played through ARR's MSQ recently and it comes up a disconcerting amount of times. Mild spoilers for the game and, uh, repeated references to sexual violence.

- In Satasha Seagrot, the female NPCs in the pirate hideout section are explicitly sex slaves. One of them swears she's not a pirate "on what remains of her virtue".

- A merchant in Ul'dah says he'll let a woman he's accusing of thievery go if she does whatever he wants. The cutscene framing and animations make his meaning pretty clear.

- A refugee in Little Ala Mhigo says she was kidnapped by bandits and violated.

- A Garlean spy in the ARR patch quests breaks down when captured, justifying her actions by talking about the terrible things she had to do to survive, including prostituting herself.

That's just off the top of my head. Except for the bit in Satasha, these are all part of the MSQ and thus front and center.

Yeah, these actually got me to quit for the longest time because I didn't like how flippant and unnecessary these story beats seemed, especially the one in Little Ala Mhigo where it was used to justify a "kill x mob" filler quest.

Now it still pops up every now and again, but it's handled with a bit more gravitas and due delicacy -- sexual assault isn't something that should be handled by killing 8 Corpse Brigade Evokers and bringing 10 Green Chocobo Tailfeathers to Quartermaster Stevebert.

If you go in blind like me and work solely on the narrative provided, the game will absolutely call you out on it. My first time I had to restart because I treated the start like a murder investigation game - questioning people, keeping calm, letting them talk and getting information. I didn't realize the point of the game was a series of choose-your-own-adventure philosophy lectures

Still a fun experience that goes some interesting places but dang it really is goonsay the game

Disco Elysium is sounding a lot like a game that you're gonna bumble through hard on your first playthrough - How very in character for this RPG and protagonist-

But an absolutely amazing thing to play on a second playthrough if you're someone that does that and doesn't immediately throw games out the window the second the main story is complete.

In a weird way I'm reminded of Hitman: there's a couple city blocks full of people and stories, and in order to see everything you need to look around. You're gonna miss stuff, and that's fine, because maybe you'll find it next time.

Yeah, Disco Elysium calling you boring is more about making you aware that you're not spreading out the web of feelers you should be in a mystery solving game. It's calling your gameplay routine, not you, which is why it's Boring Cop and not Boring Detective. Your gameplay sees you acting really normal i.e. self-railroaded and you may not realize you don't have to. Almost like the game is prodding you into remembering that you can selectively lie to others and personify yourself, not because it'll pigeonhole you into a playstyle, but because it's how you unlock further opportunities to interact in whatever way you want, even if you go back to being boring cop right after.

CJacobs has a new favorite as of 21:29 on May 2, 2022
