edit: and now ive inadvertently discovered Queen of the Ring, Vince and Stephanie hire Chyna back into the WWE, but she has to have sex in the ring instead of wrestling, so she bangs Triple H, Hulk Hogan, The Rock, Ric Flair, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Bret Hart, Iron Sheik, Doink The Clown, John Cena, and Mean Gene Okerlund.

For people interested in the Kaufman/Lawler stuff, this podcast is the most in depth I've heard on it.

I think the saga starts with episode six then jumps around a little bit.

Kaufman was such a a heel. His shamelessness and lack of fear making people uncomfortable was tailor made for the rasslin' biz. Had he lived longer, I could honestly see him as a manager character or a guest commentator. I think in a lot ways, Andy and Jerry were pioneers in combining entertainment celebrities with wrestling. There had been some combinations before but this was the first time I remember the work crossing over into the zeitgeist where it made the news and poo poo.

EDIT:

This is a better link

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLD97wUj_zvSrhVlIcYALZfDT_h0W2JY4d

This whole podcast is good. I find the shady, weird backroom poo poo that goes in this business more entertaining than the product itself.

NXT: SEASON 3

In the fall of 2010, there was good news and bad news for WWE. The good news was that SyFy wanted to be the home to WWE SmackDown. The bad news was that they only wanted one show to be on that network. NXT was no longer welcome and several episodes into the third season, it would be moved to WWE.com for streaming.

Not only that, but it was going to be the all-women season. In other words, WWE really, really did not care about this show anymore.

The list of 8 Pro/Rookie pairings dropped down to 6. Though technically, there were 7. Here are the victims.

Aloisia (Pro: Vickie Guerrero): Known as Isis the Amazon in the indies, Aloisia was a gigantic, 6’8” woman who appeared in the preview footage for the season, but then was dropped and replaced before the first episode. Nobody knows for sure why. Some say she was difficult to work with. Some say she was too awful in the ring. Some say that some fetish pics of her were online and WWE didn’t want to deal with it.

Kaitlyn (Pro: Vickie Guerrero): A fitness model who just signed with WWE and didn’t actually have any wrestling experience, Kaitlyn would have a rough start, but she’d figure herself out pretty quickly.

AJ Lee (Pro: Primo Colon): AJ was a very down-to-earth and geeky wrestler with some real charm to her. WWE proceeded to have her overly emphasize that by having her continually cut promos about how she didn’t go to prom, but stayed home to play video games, etc. While one of the more successful contestants, she was famously told by one of the bigger backstage officials (probably John Laurinaitis) that nobody wanted to gently caress her, which was why she was going to be a tremendous failure.

Naomi (Kelly Kelly): Of all the Rookies in NXT’s five seasons, Naomi has had the most longevity in WWE as a regular part of the roster. Like, she’s the women’s tag champ right now. That’s pretty cool. The idea of having Kelly Kelly as her Pro is hilarious, considering Kelly Kelly always seemed to have missed most of her training to begin with.

Maxine (Pro: Alicia Fox): Maxine’s whole deal was that she always looked like she was completely above everything going on around her. She never got any good in the ring, but she would one day be pretty drat fun in Lucha Underground.

Aksana (Pro: Goldust): Hailing from Lithuania, Aksana was also pretty trash in the ring, but she was just plain adorable as a fish-out-of-water foreigner. When she wasn’t wrestling, she was a lot of fun, as I’ll get to in a second.

Jamie (Pro: The Bella Twins): Jamie was the ring announcer for the second season of NXT. She was eliminated by the fifth week. I literally do not remember a single thing about her and she did not do anything notable after the fact.

Something worth noting here is that this is right around when Michael Cole became the absolute worst. Back in the first season, Vince made sure to have Cole constantly poo poo on Daniel Bryan when doing commentary. Then in the second season, Cole would keep it going by making GBS threads on Kaval. Around the time Bryan returned to WWE, Cole went from just insulting Bryan to just insulting everyone (except Cena). Considering he was the main commentator on all three WWE shows and the PPVs, Cole was inescapable and dragged down everything going on. It was atrocious and went on for like 2 years.

What I’m trying to say is, Michael Cole was very open to how loving awful NXT Season 3 was and would not shut up about it. But to be fair, it was pretty dire a lot of the time and was only saved by stuff like CM Punk doing guest commentary for an episode.

The season did tie into one cool storyline going on at the time. Ted Dibiase Jr. decided he wanted to live his life like his father before him and started flaunting his wealth. He started dating Maryse as a trophy girlfriend and would carry his father’s Million Dollar Belt. He and Maryse started to find mysterious love letters saying, “I want you.” They didn’t know who they were from and they disagreed over who they were for.

Finally, Goldust appeared and attacked Dibiase. He told him, “I don’t want you.” Then he looked to Maryse and said, “And I don’t want you.” He picked up the Million Dollar Belt and lovingly ran off with it.

Goldust was paired with Aksana on NXT and her subplot was that she was going to be deported. Goldust decided to just get married, so they did a big wedding segment where Dibiase Jr. bribed the official not to go through with it. Then Ted Dibiase Sr., himself a reverend, walked out and did the wedding. Goldust and Aksana were married, but Aksana then turned heel and left with the Million Dollar Belt.

The conclusion of this storyline took place on Old School Raw and it is a fever dream.

Anyway, Kaitlyn ended up winning the show. The final episode featured Maxine being caught making out with Hornswoggle.

THE AFTERMATH

Kaitlyn spent a few years on the main roster, even becoming Divas Champion at one point. Her main claim to fame was that she was great at spearing the poo poo out of AJ Lee.

AJ Lee also joined the main roster and had a strong few years. She became a big enough deal that they had her be the Raw GM for a bit. While she doesn’t get credit for her actions, she helped push the company into treating the women’s division with more respect. After several title reigns, AJ’s body broke down and she joined her husband CM Punk in retirement.

Naomi started off rough with being a cheerleader alongside Cameron (known for knowing so little about wrestling that she tried to pin somebody who was face down and told the ref, “COUNT IT!”) as valets called the Funkadactyls. More on THAT in the next entry. Naomi gradually became a huge fan favorite in the women’s division, including wearing rad glow-in-the-dark gear. She ended up being the first winner of the annual WrestleMania women’s battle royal and is still very active.

Aksana was brought to the main roster as Teddy Long’s assistant, constantly flirting with him to the sound of saxophone music. Aksana was later revealed to be the girlfriend of Cesaro, who was introduced as a rugby player. Aksana wrestled a little bit, but her career was about done when she accidentally kneed Naomi in the face so hard that she broke her orbital bone.

No idea about what became of Jamie, but Maxine wasn’t quite done with NXT.

Up next: The Ratman forgive you...this time.

I don't know what kind of label to put on myself or what to call it but I hate watching wrestling and find it stupid but I love the documentaries and podcasts about all the weird behind the scenes poo poo and how they make things work. I loved Beyond the Mat and the Andre docs I've seen but haven't found the actual product interesting or compelling since I was 10 years old. Which kinda makes sense I think.

I've been going down a Lawler rabbit hole from that link I posted and he seems like a really cool dude. He's a good story teller and obviously has a ton of inside information to share.

...

Semi related: a lot of the suggested YT videos are pretty disturbing. Lots of low budget, small audience events where dudes just try to bleed as much as humanly possible. I tapped out after watching a couple of them but, from what little I watched, all I could think of was a heavy dose of BDSM fetishes with a lot of homo erotic overtones and violent fantasies. I'm talking about the razor blade boards, barbed wire and light tube poo poo.

So many light tubes.

It's like a bunch of rednecks go to Home Depot, calculate ways to increase blood flow while minimizine risk and charge 25 bucks a head. It really bothered me and I felt bad for the talent but a part of me wonders if they're just masochists who ENJOY getting hurt or big, strong hillbillies with a high pain threshold and few job options. How is this poo poo even legal? The audience bothers me too. I imagine myself walking out after 10 minutes.

From what little I saw, every match has to end up with a trip to the hospital, involves copious amounts of pain killers and probably very little in the way of health coverage, doctors on hand or liability insurance. I'm estimating the stack of waivers is 95% of whatever amounts to a contract. So weird.

Lawler is certainly not the worst when you look at all the other poo poo that's happened. Like, I'm pretty sure he never killed anyone or covered up a murder.

In 1993 he was indicted in Louisville, KY on charges of statutory rape and sodomy of a 15-year old girl. Charges were dropped after the girl claimed nothing happened. His books also details his married to Stacey Carter and how he basically stalked her when she tried to leave him. She was 19 when they met and (he would have been in his 50s) and he was also married at the time.

He may not drink or take drugs but women are definitely his vice. He's a typical, "I can sleep with whoever I want but my wife must remain faithful to me" types.

The fans love blood and I think back when it was introduced it helped see everything as real in a way that was relatively safe for the wrestlers. I remember all those old magazine covers.

Like, cuts on your forehead and poo poo will bleed like a motherfucker so it looks intense but it's not like getting your nose broken, your teeth knocked out or a deep gash on your eye in a boxing match

Something that confuses me is how wrestling hasn't been sued/OSHA'd into oblivion.

You can't waiver out of workplace safety regulations and the amount of blood flowing doesn't seem like it'd pass for a compliant bloodborn pathogen program (to say nothing of Mick Foley-esque "the plan is to fall 15ft onto my head, then work through the concussion and shattered teeth")

Isn't Vince famous for not providing health insurance to his performers?

And, agreed. I don't know how the gently caress he gets away with it either. I guess the same way boxers can't sue for getting hosed up in the ring nor MMA guys for getting their loving faces caved in. I guess there's some clause of implied risk and I'd have to imagine the legalese includes a lot of safety language about doctors at ringside and poo poo but still.

But I mean if the job you're signing up for involves getting slammed on by 45 pound guys leaping off the top rope and having yourself slammed into tables, you kinda gotta figure there's some legally enforcable waivers in there somewhere. Vince has a ton of money and his performers really don't so there's that too. Maybe he settles a few cases quietly here and there.

What ever became of the Owen Hart situation? I have to think someone paid out somewhere for that.
