I helped host an old necromunda campaign over a decade back. We built a massive number of very nice looking terrain pieces from a combination of junk, bitz, and a lot of foam-core. Probably the most fun I had gaming.

I said before one of the reasons I was getting into Necromunda was to make terrain and I wasn't kidding. Battle Brothers Tabletop had a episode / interview with Glass Half Dead out today (or yesterday) titled "Is Kill Team Any Fun" and basically summed up what something I felt but hadn't consciously realized: KT is a very solid and good game, but it is designed for being super competitive, and you have to be so focused on rules / strategy / etc. while you play that it is borderline stressful. I actually enjoy that sometimes and will definitely be playing KT for a while, but Necromunda just seems like fun. Someone posted about it's just crazy poo poo happening and you tell stories about nutso endings to games and so on and how the models develop personalities and so and and I'm all sorts of in on that as well.

If I'm getting into Necromunda with Clan Escher do I just need the core rulebook and House of Blades?

I thought I read something about an updated core rulebook dropping with Ash Wastes. Should I wait until that is released seperately?

I have the same question but with Cawdor instead of Escher.

Wait for the Ash Wastes rulebook - it's updated (or so GW says) and it makes no sense to pay for the current one if it's getting deprecated. And yes, you will need your specific House of... book to play your gang.

Again, you can also go to Yaktribe and get the NCE rulebook (which has the lists) and try the game out. Oldschool NM and NM17 aren't too much different, so you can learn the basics before committing to anything.

Yep buy the rule book (when it’s seperate In a couple of weeks) and your house specific book, then you’re good to go.

Stuff like the book of peril etc is a ‘nice to have’ after your first campaign or 2.

The ash wastes book itself is the current rule book with some minor FAQs and the new ash wastes setting and missions.

Beats me, I'm still surprised the original Space Marine didn't displace 40k more than it did (while it was in print).

it's really expensive outside of the uk and doesn't have the momentum (read: large used market full of cheap models and potential for third-party alternatives) of GW's other side games

Yep! The first edition of Epic was Adeptus Titanicus, followed by Space Marine, which was an expansion that introduced armies that weren't titans. In second edition, it was the other way around: Space Marine was the core rules, while Titan Legions was an addon that reformed the rules for titans to make them more compatible with the second edition. The third edition was Epic 40K and had all the rules in one. The fourth edition was Epic Armageddon, and IIRC wasn't ever properly published as a printed book.

Now, there are two popular fan-made rulesets. NetEpic is an update of second edition, as a rejection of the changes made for third edition, and NetEA or Net Epic Armageddon is an update of fourth edition.

They updated the Necromunda rulebook errata a couple days ago: https://www.warhammer-community.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/87J0jgS4omrX35qE.pdf. There's some vehicle related stuff in there, but nothing about vehicle combat and so on.

Honestly i would play if they just turn it into Epic proper and start putting in Ork, Eldar, Tau titans.

I want gargants dammit.

It sounds silly, but I think a lot of people were turned off from Epic by the fact that everything is small and therefore "I could never paint something that small!" Epic is a great game and it's a shame that it's never really taken off - the same could be said of Warmaster.

Re: Ash Wastes - I watched the GMG review of the set, and it's not super impressive. IMO, the terrain is pretty sparse, and Ash going though the rulebook didn't inspire any confidence. Even he said that he was kind of underwhelmed at the lack of any real vehicle content in there. It appears that the book has just enough of the vehicle rules to allow you to play with the contents, but no more, and it isn't really fleshed out. Obviously, there's going to be yet another book for vehicle lists and one for Ash Wastes Nomads, since they don't really receive anything more than a cursory mention.

As much as I hate the NM book bloat, I really wish they would just do a straight core rulebook and not put half-assed "get you by" rules in it. An Ash Wastes environment supplemental booklet in the box would have been fine. I love NM, but goddamn, every release is pushing me further away from this version.

Yeah, this is out of date. It should be:

Core Rulebook (Soon to be replaced with Ash Wastes Core Rulebook)
\/
House of... (Choose your gang)
\/
Trading Post (A core component of the game is not in the rulebook - go figure. PDF at https://www.warhammer-community.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/zFYGqatsxNZJGsKM.pdf)
\/
Basic Campaign (The Dominion Campaign is in the core rulebook, which is OOP. Ash Wastes has the "Ash Wastes Campaign", so I don't know how you're going to get it, unless GW releases a PDF)
\/
Book of... (Advanced Campaign systems and alt Trading Posts)

Ive been mainly lookimg at that pdf you can get by typing "necromunda rules" into google, its pretty good for basic and campaign rules but only has the most basic stuff for your gangs so i think you can think of those specific house books as a codex system like with the other gw games

I'm assuming the Ash Wastes rulebook won't mix stuff up too much as far as building a Clan Escher gang? I was planning on going off the Goonhammer guide for starting off, but I pumped the breaks when Ash Wastes was announced.

I've heard nothing but great things about the AT rules, but when I look at those models my eyes just glaze over. Well painted ones are amazing looking, but god drat is that just a lot of stuff happening and there are so many components. I don't think I could ever do them justice and it would bother me immensely to do them poorly.

I'm assuming the new Ash Waste doesn't have amazing combat vehicle rules like Gorkamorka had wherein we can jump vehicle to vehicle murdering as we go?

I'm speculating here, but I don't think any of the core gang concepts will be changed. The way it works is that you have a set number of credits for your gang, and a new, additional "bucket" of credits for mounts. If you don't spend the mount credit, you lose it. I will say that the core dynamics may change a bit though? Obviously a H2H weapon is still going to be good against another ganger, but maybe not so much against a vehicle (though I assume there is a chance that crew can be targeted.)

All in all, the NM:AW box comes with two regular old gangs, in addition to the mounts, and Ash at GMG said that it's pretty much still NM, just outside. I wouldn't worry too much about gangs being completely revamped or anything.

From what I've heard, not yet. Possibly in a future vehicle supplement.
