Sounds like it's as much regressive media as any other :airquote:neutral:airquote: platform such as reddit. If "We tolerate Nazis as long as they spend their money" qualifies as regressive, then yeah.

At best, they are letting greed overwrite their morals. And really, isn't that the perfect representation of a large chunk of regressives in 2022?

I also have to surrender to the argument that Biden and his administration have been an utter disaster but, again, it's never for the reasons they assume or automatically think I agree with when I say that Biden sucks rear end.

If anything, to me, Bongino made the point that the people most poo poo on by the pandemic actually spent all that extra money they were given and it trickled right back up into the pockets of billionaires. He was very close to making arguments for wealth redistribution, which is obviously what we have to do, but I doubt he nor his audience are self aware enough to realize that that's what they're bascially arguing for.

Mainly what I heard is that the people at the bottom are getting hosed over the most and, again, he's right. But somehow the blame landed on "too much socialism" or whatever. I have to assume it did and, to be fair, the ones in charge catch the blame. I didn't stick around long enough to learn why it was Obama's fault for sending out those stimulus checks that caused inflation and led to 9/11 but what struck me was how similar Don's arguments were to the complaints and grievances of the so called radical far left.

He was effectively saying how hosed up it is that all the burden of the C19 economy was shouldered by the working class and how obscene corporate profits were during all of it but somehow the problem was "See? The Radical Left!" I didn't listen long enough to get to the "why".

Conservatives, neo-nazis, etc. all can tell that some thing is totally and utterly wrong with society and they're getting screwed. They all know that the faceless and celebrated ultra rich have none of their interests in mind. They know that establishment politics isn't working to make things right. And they are all absolutely frustrated. And so many of them recognize the same problems and perpetrators that anyone to their left does.

The difference is in who they blame for it. The left vles the powerful, the right blames the powerless. Because if how effective stoking fears are in national media, it's a fuckin hell of a lot easier to convince conservatives with mass media that the problem is the people they're afraid of or already hated like black people, immigrants, Muslims, and China.

What's amazing is how on-board a lot of conservatives are with concepts born from socialism like minimum income, guaranteed healthcare and housing, and making higher ed more accessible, so long as you don't use the S-word. But they can't get over their xenophobia, and the right-wing electorate is cohesive enough that it's so hard to peel them off.

Panfilo posted:

The crimes admittedly are just "allegedly" but:

The New Yorker posted:

A member of Issa’s Army unit, Jay Bergey, told Williams that his most vivid recollection of the young Issa was that in December, 1971, Issa stole his car, a yellow Dodge Charger. “I confronted Issa,” Bergey said in 1998. “I got in his face and threatened to kill him, and magically my car reappeared the next day, abandoned on the turnpike.”

Bergey died of lung cancer in 2002, but his widow, Joyce, recently said to me that she remembered her husband telling the story of the stolen Dodge Charger. She laughed when she heard that Issa is now a prominent member of Congress. “Well, he probably figured he was borrowing it from a friend,” she said. “But now we’re discussing politicians, so we all know how honest they are. When I meet a good one, I’ll let you know.”

On March 15, 1972, three months after Issa allegedly stole Jay Bergey’s car and one month after he left the Army for the first time, Ohio police arrested Issa and his older brother, William, and charged them with stealing a red Maserati from a Cleveland showroom. The judge eventually dismissed the case.

Years after those escapades Issa invested in an electronics firm and also acquired a business selling car anti-theft devices. Until...

quote:

At 2:35 a.m. on September 7, 1982, the phone rang in Issa’s house. The Quantum and Steal Stopper office and factory was on fire. Issa got dressed and drove the seven miles from his house, in Oakwood Village, to his workplace, in Maple Heights. He arrived by 3 a.m., to find blue flames shooting from holes in the roof. Four fire engines, a helicopter, and forty-three firefighters from three departments responded to the alarm. When the firemen entered the building, they encountered black smoke so thick they couldn’t see their hands in front of their faces. The fire took three hours to bring under control.

A lieutenant in the Maple Heights Fire Department noted in his incident report that the “cause of this fire appears to be electrical.” The fire had started at a workbench where light bulbs for bug zappers were tested. Almost everything of value was gone. Fortunately for Issa, he had recently increased his fire insurance.

***

Issa was soon suspected of doing something worse: burning down the factory. The initial notion that an electrical socket had caused the fire was challenged. The science of determining whether a fire was caused by arson can be flawed. But a fire-analysis report commissioned by the St. Paul insurance company, and dated October 19, 1982, a month after the incident, concluded that the fire was “incendiary.” The report cited “suspicious burn patterns,” such as “two separate major areas of origin,” and it said, “No accidental source of heating power was located at either of these two major areas of origin.” The manner in which stacks of cardboard boxes burned was inconsistent with an accidental fire. A flammable liquid appeared to have been poured over the boxes. The blue flames seen emanating from the roof were evidence, according to the investigators, of burning carbon monoxide that is produced when an accelerant like gasoline ignites. The black smoke was also a clue. “Such black smoke normally occurs in a fire only when a hydrocarbon is burning,” the report said. When investigators tested burn damage from inside the factory, they found “the same identical mixture of flammable hydrocarbons” in four samples taken from diverse locations

Don't you tell me my business again.
Gonna cross post this

Where to put this....?

This morning I stopped at a convenience store and the dude in front of me was giving the cashier some poo poo. I know the worker. He's the manager and I interact with a lot because the store is right down the street from me. Nice guy and a really hard worker. He's Hispanic I think or Central American. He's not white in any case and his English is spotty but dude is awesome.

Anyway, guy in front of me in line was giving him poo poo. The little display screen by the register had a thing to donate to the Red Cross and dude was all "gently caress that. Erase that and put up a link to donate to all the Marines who died in Afghanistan. Or do they not matter?! You say you love them but don't do nothin". Really going off about what he thought the screen should say. My man behind the counter kept it together and was chuckling. Blowing him off. Obviously, he doesn't control what the store puts up on the checkout screen or the gas pumps. Customer wouldn't shut the gently caress up about Marines and poo poo and seemed really agitated at 8:00 in the morning. The display cycled to a 2 for 1 Five Hour Energy Drink sale and he was like "ooo...two for one" and then bought two.

I queued up my video to record poo poo because I was honestly afraid something weird was going on. I honestly thought the customer thought the manager was middle eastern and was trying to get in his face. Customer eventually left and when it was my turn I asked my cashier friend wtf that was about. He said that the guy "is trying to be like a teacher" and "tries to educate people what is going on in the world". Apparently he does this at that store regularly; or daily.

Jesus Christ.

I go out to my car and I guess "customer" saw my Philadelphia 76ers sticker because now he starts trying talk to ME about if Joel Embiid is gonna play this series and how hosed the Sixers are because he's injured. I kinda blew him off but, god drat. I KNOW this dude spends his whole day spewing the poo poo he hears on AM radio and reads on FB. I bet he's never bought anything from that store without standing on the soap box he brings with him and holding up the line. Obviously, he's mentally ill but I couldn't help but wonder how all this Newsmax/QAnon/Infowars poo poo contributes to that.

Poor dude at the gas station gets an earful every morning.

Yeah, Obergefell is on the block next, the leak hints strongly at it and Abbott has already said he's got that round in the next chamber ready to fire. Every statehouse with Republicans in it almost certainly has a bill ready to go from ALEC by now or will by the time the ruling is made. Probably won't pass without grandfathering current couples in, but that'd also break the back of enough of the opposition and anyway they could just pretend they never promised that later.
