Rall: Good Luck with Sanctions

Ted Rall posted:

The Russian invasion of Ukraine prompted the usual American response of imposing economic sanctions on Russia and Russian nationals. You only have to look at Cuba and Iran to see how consistently ineffective sanctions are. To the contrary, they tend to increase the popularity of the targeted government as a a siege mentality sets in.

This is so loving stupid, by the logic of this cartoon nobody should care about sanctions because they don't do anything, when in reality they cause lots of suffering while not causing regime change

Leave it to Rall to twist a reasonable perspective to mind boggling dumbass lunacy

Rall, sanctions weak isn't the way to get people to cheer for your team. You need to lead with the correct statement that sanctions against Cuba and Iran are evil things whose only purpose is to cause suffering in the civilian population. Then you can try to claim that the Russian sanctions are similarly motivated by spite and cruelty. It'd still be a lie but at least it's one that fits a narrative with things that are true. How can someone this bad at their job be paid for it?

The firehose model of contradictory propaganda narratives, targeting every line of possible political division to encourage civic disengagement, doesn't require quality so much as quantity and diversity. Like Rall himself, the marks just need to believe they are reaching their beliefs independently, or enshrine their ignorance and cynical detachment as insight. It still works.

Yeah but his whole audience is this thread. The CSPAM cartoon thread doesn't even share him. Whereas Chinese propaganda is well made enough to get nominated Oscars and generally be media I'd recommend albeit with cavaets. It makes sense that China a better run vastly more powerful nation has better propaganda to a failing petro state, but you'd think Russia would at least try.

Rall writes columns for Sputnik that receive wider syndication, including through conservative channels (a quick googling finds bylines as of last November in the WSJ, for instance). Although his set of channels and syndicated platforms were greatly reduced in the period following the 2014 invasion of Ukraine when media started generally paying more attention to how Russia operates, he and similar entities had a much larger audience for many years; Rall was a prominent figure and his cartoons appeared in a lot of places. And, again, the point is not to persuade large audiences; it's to poo poo up discourse with a whole bunch of material from seemingly separate sources, that self-propogate through the people they persuade. Rall is one of many such angles of attack. He's just an obvious one that we see a lot here because he's old, he's well-documented and relatively obvious, and here, he is effective, however lovely he may be.

It's a couple months old, but one impression from propaganda-watchers posted in the Ukraine war thread is that the recent shifts in Russian propaganda aren't that they've stopped or are becoming less effective, but rather that they've moved a lot of their resources to targeting audiences in India and China that are, at the moment, more important.

China also runs a wide range of propaganda materials of varying quality, even if, at least until relatively recently, they used direct persuasion lines ("here is the thing we want you to believe about China") and haven't tried the same civic disruption approach. They've also got lovely propaganda cartoonists, even in their most direct foreign facing outlet (these used to be posted here regularly, though unfortunately that's stopped as the forum continues to be run into the ground).

Sanctions are bad because the people in power can just reroute resources to them and let the people suffer. Then they can blame the US, which isn’t even propaganda since we are the ones doing it.

But that may be the intent, as then capitalists can show how bad things are as proof that country’s way of doing things is bad as opposed to our pure and wholesome hegemonic capitalism. As if a country cut off from the world can create a utopia without any problems.

In short: Rall wrong but for different reasons than he may think.

You're investing significantly too much power into the influence of news paper articles and people who discuss politics to the degree of this forum. He's probably better than literally nothing at all, but still strictly inferior to the guy they send around to every history channel and spike tv event claiming to be ex-spetsnaz who makes up Russian martial arts moves. Given that the outsized belief in Russia's military and political power has been their best crafted lie for decades.

As my post already said, Rall as propagandist is now much less influential than he used to be, and he used to have much more influence, but the entire point is they do not have to choose. Spike guy and Rall and troll farms and radio programs and "independent media groups" and faked "leak" sites, they do hundreds of things, targeting multiple subgroups from multiple directions. Some of them get discarded, many stick around and their combined effects create enclosed consensus. The goal is to get people to buy into the subclaims and use them to poo poo up discussion by ruining a shared set of facts or beliefs and inducing conflict. It works.

Yes I am aware, I have grasped this the whole time. I just think Rall is a particularly bad employee in this distributed scheme. In particular having the guy who points to real problems in the US and also run interference on Russian evil is bad delegating.

Rall already made a comic saying that sanctions against Russia will harm the Russian people:

He also made a comic saying that sanctions against Russia are actually good:

So yeah, I think this lends support to Discendo Vox's statement that Rall is just using multiple arguments to lead different groups of people to the same conclusion: sanctions against Russia should end, because, depending on whatever argument best appeals to your politics, they are are useless, harmful, or good for Russia.

Raised By Birds

quote:

HOW DARE YOU TAKE AWAY OUR RIGHT TO KILL BABIES, THEY SHRIEKED

According to a leaked report, The Supreme Court will overturn Roe vs. Wade and allow the states to determine their own laws on abortion. Predictably, many far-left heads exploded with rage. We witnessed many freak outs and threats of violence, but perhaps the best example came from Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren. When asked about the ruling, she went into a fit of apoplectic hysteria. Pocahontas lost it. She could barely speak and was out of breath. I thought perhaps she was having a panic attack. She was sending out smoke signals out of her ears as she and her crew trampled through some freshly-planted landscaping.

Why are the reactions among the left so extreme? Why does abortion make up the centerpiece in the platform of Democrats? Why are they so proud of murdering millions of babies since the original 1973 ruling of Roe vs. Wade? That ruling struck down all state laws pertaining to abortion and made the procedure legal upon demand. The current Supreme Court wants to correct that and let the states again decide. Warren hates this with fury and passion, but her leftist state will continue to allow abortions the same as usual. She wants to force her abortion on all 50 states. Warren, like most in her party, calls abortion ‘women’s health care.’ It’s a way of sanitizing murder.

The way the left describes it, you’d think the child in the womb is a disease. A mass of offending matter that must be removed. They don’t talk about the pain the innocent beings must feel. The unborn human is often dismembered. Sometimes skulls are crushed. It’s a brutal and heartless procedure that few of us want to talk about. Worse, many aborted babies are sold to Big Pharma and corporations to be used in vaccines and other ghoulish ways. It has become an industry. At G. Edward Griffin’s Red Pill Expo in Grand Rapids last year, I saw a short video that was taken clandestinely. It showed aborted babies at an abortion clinic. They were lined up on racks and frequently sprayed with saline solution. The fresh bodies were auctioned off. It was a most disturbing and disgusting scene, but the ghoulishness was apparently lost on the doctors, technicians, and buyers there. Money was being made.

This pure evil is what Warren and the left stridently demand. When their precious abortion is threatened they explode into a satanic frenzy.

The evil doers have had their way for far too long. It’s time for America to stop the holocaust.
