Likewise.

Telling my boyfriend "THE ONLY GAY DUDE I'M MARRYING IS A DUMB BROAD WITH A BIG VEINY RACK" with an elated grin on my face didn't actually amuse him that much, which is probably one of the reasons why we broke up eventually. Ah, memories.

It would have been weird as hell for me to have been dating a highschooler when homestuck first started, even more so when it was popular

Speaking of Homestuck, I was talking to a teen coworker and brought up Kingdom Hearts. She responded by saying that she didn’t even know what that is.

I’ve legitimately never talked to a teen and went “oh God, I’m old now” before

Was Kingdom Hearts ever a household name? I played video games my whole life and only ever had an offhand knowledge of it being some game that had goofy and tidus from FFX in it for some reason.

I would simply refer to him as 'Protagonist from Super Smash Brothers Ultimate' and save us both the embarrassment.

But the protagonist is of Smash Bros is Kirby

Just to keep in theme with the thread here’s an official Kirby comic from Germany, where Kirby looks at porn

It's actually partially a joke about how the author never actually read Hitchhiker's guide themselves

"this interview posted:

ST: This comic was pitched as "somewhat of a Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy for kids". Why Hitchhiker's Guide and how much of that was intentional when you started writing Softies?

KS: I have to come clean with my dark secret, which is that I've never read any of the Hitchhiker's Guide books.

Comparisons started pretty immediately as soon as I started posting Softies online, but I think Spike [Trotman, publisher] specifically was the one to refine the elevator pitch into "Hitchhiker's Guide as Calvin and Hobbes". I think most similarities boil down to Douglas Adams being so influential on the intersection of sci-fi and comedy that the books' tone and ideas just became part of the fabric of the genre. I hear they're very good, so I'm flattered regardless.

I know that in Hitchhiker's Guide, the Earth is demolished to make room for a freeway development, which is funnier than any possible justification I could ever come up with for destroying the Earth in my story.

I do find it an interesting point in comparison between the two thread cultures; the people who like the comic were more vocal in the BYOB/CCCC thread while the people who dislike it are more vocal here

To be fair, this comic is roughly 75% comics/25% telling everyone else which comics you don't like, even outside of Softies

The Pokémon comic is clearly by an amateur and so it gets graded on a different scale. Softies is very much a professional product and so I’m going to treat it as a professional work. Is Softies better than Apocalypse Johto? Yeah, I think so. Would I read Softies before Apocalypse Johto? Once again, yes.

As a comic, I find it to be a lackluster Hitchhiker’s Guide with modern “quirky” humor that oscillates between charming enough and pretty grating. I think the comic’s extreme disinterest in its setting to be a big flaw and I think the comic assumes that people will like the protagonists without giving the audience a real reason to. It’s pleasant enough fluff but I’ve read a lot of pleasant fluff and at best Softies is mediocre

I would read apocalypse johto before reading softies. I think an edgy and grimdark Pokémon comic written by someone who's new to like making comics but is going straight ahead and doing it anyways is just more interesting to read.

Not that I think Softies shouldn't be posted anymore, it's easy enough to read and distinguish what's going on even on mobile that I'm perfectly content to see where it's going, even if I don't care that much either way.

The only thing I actually skip through are the ones that are too hard to read on my phone, like the Scrooge McDuck pages that were made to be read on paper (not that I think they shouldn't be posted, plenty of people seem to be enjoying them just fine).

the cccc thread has had a weird evolution. back when, it seemed to me to be about posting terrible comics with a couple of actual good ones interspersed. now this thread has taken that niche, and the byob one is all about posting walls of stuff that the poster adores. with a brief sideline in copyright crimes.

An issue caused by the comic's age(?) is how tiny the text can be. I assume it's a compression thing from back when monitors were smaller and connections were slower.
