Yesterday i was sitting in the park with my daughter in a field of dandelions full of bees coloring when i got this funny feeling after watching some of the crayon wax fall off the pages of the coloring book and did a quick Google search, I guess crayons are made of plastic now lol. Thinking about how it will get taken up by a dandelion and then eaten by a bee and then used as part of the hives wax structure. The plastic cycle. Beautiful.

They're also insulating apartment blocks here which is good I guess but they do it with just these big styrofoam blocks that they have to saw to fit around windows etc and it makes a huge mess it look there's been a fresh dusting of snow on the streets.

The ban was absolutely dumb, if only because the stated reason was not the real reason and was disingenuous.

But what difference does it make? We're animals, basically, in a natural element that is cratering. Why do we disagree? We are all idiots. Although this Biosphere Collapse thread is not restricted from using doomer-lite talk, an AI-controlled mod will take offense at a poster's choice of such.

which, is kinda the thing with class struggle. a utopia for some is always a dystopia for the rest.

but yeah, drat. still thinking class struggle through energy capture. all human social groups have material antagonisms cuz of loving thermodynamics.

which means like

1 - we're hosed, and we were swimming against the tide our entire existence.

2 - the communist horizon (exigency/impossibility) pre-exists human beings. it's ontological, not historical.

iirc there's only like the first couple of inches of soil that's actually worth anything nutritionally when it comes it farmland.

That will all blow away pretty quick.

with no water nothing will naturally take hold to replenish the deeper soil

so without any rains or intervention it'll probably become a dead dustbowl

Topsoil is scoured away with wind.

Salts become more concentrated, especially in areas that have used irrigation for a long time.

Then wherever it does rain, the ground is so hard that water can't penetrate, so it just further washes away whatever topsoil is left.

During the heat Dome last year I ignored sections of my yard for watering and they went bone dry and it took halfway thought the rainy Seattle winter before they seemed to fully hydrate again.

The advice I was given was "use a small amount of soap to help penetrate" if I had wanted to fix it faster which just seems insane to me.

When I say bone dry I mean I'd water a little under the western red cedars to try to make sure the things didn't get perma hosed but the water would just bead on top of the soil and never absorb. I had never experienced that in my life and I've been gardening since I was a kid so 30ish years.

right now i'm living on heavy clay. recently we had a "dry spell" for this area (it didn't rain for like, six weeks? lol) and just that brief drying caused the clay to crack so deeply that people's houses have been destabilised. (clay that's well-covered by topsoil is better hydrated and slower to dry and crack.) nobody comprehends how much topsoil does for them, how good everything was when there was lots of it, and the slow disaster now it's all been stripped away and washed into the sea.
