Even if cryptocurrency finally dies for good, the diehards will spend the rest of their lives convinced that it was a conspiracy by Big Fiat or SOROS or whatever the hell, to suppress the True Currency of the People.

Just as with other types of fundamentalist throughout the ages, no point in reasoning or explaining anything to these clowns, they are nearly almost universally a lost cause. The world is an insanely complicated place - you're not supposed to know everything, all the time - but they will gravitate to some of the most insane poo poo ever conceived rather than admit they've been had or don't have all the answers in any number of areas. In this case, it's tech bro-worshipping, Gordon Gecko wannabes that got balls deep into scamland and now the party's starting to not look so good, so they'll find some batshit excuse rather than think or say that they, with their total financial irresponsibility, are responsible in any way.

This is a very good article, thanks for surfacing it again. “Investing” is how you’re supposed to get ahead in America, and that’s only accelerated in our lifetimes, as America’s strategy has been to provide the unchallenged resource allocation model for the world. Actual material production is secondary. The house you live in, if your name is on the title, isn’t just a roof over your head, it’s also an “investment.”But even if you come back to reality, what “investments” are on offer? More and more of the high growth tech companies are coming to market with dual- or multi-class shares where you don’t even have the fig leaf of voting rights or meaningful participation. I believe the number I saw was in the neighborhood of 30% of IPOs on the NASDAQ last year. It’s just another case of “number go up.” The best way for most people to invest, which somewhat insulates them from the gambling inherent to the crypto crap, but also from influencing corporate decision making, is through broad stock market ETFs. You’re starting to see Musk and his buddies rant about this, but they’re authoritarians in their own right, and many of them have bankrolled the companies issuing multi-class shares while using stuff like crypto and trading apps to talk economic inclusion out of the other side of their mouth. The abstractions underpinning our economy are buckling, and Yet Another Crypto Crash is just one milestone in a scenario that’s going to take years to play out, but I struggle to see how we can avoid a broader backlash. If we’re lucky, what will come of this is Vice, BuzzFeed, or whatever equivalent outfit exists in 20 years running a series of hilarious articles with headlines like “These True Believers Are Still Mining Bitcoin, We Asked Them Why.” But it feels like that outcome needs a lot of luck indeed.

Very fun watching the BTC graph trying to keep its head above the symbolic 30K number. Pretty big wall of people fighting there but also there's a huge SELL IT ALL wall at $25K

A lot of people are losing a lot of money they cannot afford to lose because they got tricked which is bad, but my beliefs that crypto is stupid are being vindicated which is good.

To be fair, we did try to warn them. But if the crash is big enough I wouldn't be surprised to see some kind of government action taken.

It's sad that regular stupid people are losing money they can't afford to lose, but the sooner the crypto crash happens the fewer people will be impacted. Fidelity is trying to get this poo poo into 401ks and there have already been a few pension funds buying crypto, I hope we aren't in "too big to fail" US bailing out bitcoin territory yet, but we're not that far off if it doesn't crash soon

Maybe some kind of crypto cake. I think they'll burn up the money printer before allowing that to happen, so I think it's sadly unlikely, but it's possible enough that I am enjoying the hell out of this.
