We also make it insanely difficult to import formula too, even from countries with safety standards that meet/exceed our own.

Contamination is going to happen eventually, I believe the arguement is that having extreme rules means that the market is so limited that when a contamination does happen the entire national stock is obliterated. Whether that's true or not I'm not sure, I am unfamiliar with the standards, but high standards don't prevent issues on their own.

It's a cheap-to-produce interchangeable product, so the existing players have very little leverage to keep competitors out of the market without some sort of artificial barrier jacking up the capital cost of forming one. Yes but you are ignoring that a regional monopoly is ALSO a problem that needs to be solved, and not just by importing competitors from overseas. And to that end, don't put it above manufacturers to make up shortages to drive up cost.

It's a market sector that is massively profitable because of volume, not margins. Getting distribution set up and shelf space in stores is expensive, especially when there's only a relatively small number of retailers that control most of that shelf space as well.

^^^That was it^^^ PRO CLICK BTW for anyone interested in this thread I didn't hear the whole segment but what the half hour I did hear was compelling and filled me with rage. Thanks! re: BABY FORMULA: I was gonna say, there's gotta be a RWM article or TV segment explaining why all this baby formula shortage is the result of democrats wanting to starve them to ramp up the adrenochrome supply chain. Or it's because of some burdensome "safety" regulations where old fashioned american factories can't make the poo poo. Or it's because of NAFTA. Whatever it is or why it's happening, the answer has to be "Biden and the Democrats" and probably some "democrats hate babies anyway/abortion so what do they care?" poo poo sprinkled in there so that the message is dems are causing this to increase support for abortions because "see? We can't feed them" Soros probably has a hand in it somehow. Haven't heard him mentioned in a month or two. BiggerBoat fucked around with this message at 19:42 on May 12, 2022 |

We kiiinda had an infant formula shortage here because of safety regulations. In that the regulations meant that the formula was good and safe, and when the baby formula in China turned out to not be safe we had a lot of people buying it off the shelf here to send to their relatives in China, meaning shops had trouble keeping it in stock and had to limit the quantity-per-purchaser.

Tangentially related to RWM, I enjoyed this op-ed about the gradual but consistent movement rightward of the Overton Window and what it means now to be a repbulican https://www.cnn.com/2022/05/13/opinions/gop-extremists-kathy-barnette-trump-zelizer/index.html It goes into Goldwater, Reagan, Gingrich, Palin and touches on RWM a bit. quote:While Democrats keep coming back to their center with politicians such as President Biden or Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Republicans are continuing to go all in with the newest crop of extremists. The dynamic is almost inevitable as this is the history of the modern GOP.

You have to realize that probably 1/5 of the population looks at this shooting and concludes "it's about loving time" This country is rapidly embracing fascism and all of our problems as a nation create a very fertile and ripe environment for it to fully happen. Trump's win in 2024 is going to be seen as a redemption for the right and a conclusive repudiation of "socialism", even though Biden is pretty far from a radical left wing socialist. Doesn't matter. They're TOLD he is and they believe it. His abject failure on every conceivable level is all they're going to need for the great Double Down. It's like Carter ---> Reagan all over again except that at least Jimmy Carter was/is a decent human being. Who's going to stop this? And how? poo poo feels real ugly to me right now and the mood is very toxic, tense and angry here in the 904 of Florida. All this Tucker and talk radio poo poo certainly isn't helping and one can't tell teh difference between this shooter's manifesto and Carlson transcript. I increasingly feel like we are in big, BIG trouble. I think we can give it about 24 hours before the RWM starts calling this guy a left wing looney and points to his owning a copy of Mein Kampf as evidence. Because Hitler was a socialist you see. Roe v Wade is dead and gay marriage and contraception are next. Vote by mail. Gerrymandering out the rear end. We're hosed.

We have been in big trouble, so we are not currently in some worse situation, we're just more aware. Do your best to survive in a hostile world and look for opportunities to make it better. Helps me, anyhow. That, and a metric ton of privilege.
