I think people should still volunteer to help children. if you really believe that it's them who get the short end of the stick, wouldn't it make sense to invest time and empathy into improving their lives? For a couple of hours a week, you could absolutely make a huge difference for a kid who maybe won't ever get the chance to live in the world we currently do. I'm not blind to climate change, but if our children are truly going to be hurt the most by what we collectively do, then I'm going to make their lives positive and safe and help them cope with the world as best I can before I die.

I think a lot of the posters here are really concerned about where the world is headed (death), and their hearts break the most for all the kids who're basically hosed by things they have no control over. Why not spend some time helping those kids build coping skills? Chaperoning nature trips? Working at drop-in centers where teenagers can go when they don't feel safe or comfortable at home? It's not possible to avert the end of climate change, but you, Fly Molo, can make a huge difference for someone out there.

i understand where you’re coming from and what you’re trying to do, but it’s patronizing and a little rude tbh. you’re making broad, negative value judgements about the lives of the posters itt. unless you’re asserting that “the doomers here spend so much time posting that they just can’t fit in any time to do good”, you’re presenting a false choice between posting and doing good. i do both, and I’m sure many other posters itt do as well. my posting time itt amounts to minutes per week.

so why are you telling people to stop posting in this thread? because the topic of how we’re killing every ecosystem on the planet is depressing? yeah it is, no poo poo, but I’d rather know than not know.

let’s put the shoe on the other foot: if i followed you around to other threads and told you to stop posting in them because you should spend that time volunteering extra, that would be a little rude, no? you can post and also do good in the world?

If you were confident about the amazing impact you are having on the world you wouldn't have set up shop here for days to lecture people on how your mentoring of children matters while crossposting posts to another thread to also rant there about the amazing impact you are having on the world. It's desperate.

I'm genuinely making suggestions that match up to the discussion people were having. I'm also not sure where you think I'm saying that i have an amazing impact on the world. You are by far one of the most aggressive posters in this thread, and I don't understand what about making suggestions to Fly Molo makes you think that I think I'm better than you. We're all trying to live on the world together, and it genuinely makes me happy to try and spread information about what people can do to help the most vulnerable people on the earth be healthy and safe.

I'm truly not telling people to stop posting in the thread. I'm saying: here is the problem: children are hosed. Here is something we can do to help children. I felt like it was timely? And I apologize for being rude, but I also don't understand why people respond so poorly to small suggestions like these. If it was just you and me talking, I would really like to have a discussion. But it's you, the two guys who implied I was a pedophile, the guys telling me I haven't accepted climate change/think I'm better than them, etc.

e: though I do understand what you're saying in the last part of your post. That would be rude, and sometimes I get so excited about something like this that I forget people don't need to hear my ideas about how they can make a difference.

if you want a climate thread where negativity is prohibited and a positive attitude about community gardens and carbon capture technology is mandatory, there already is one: the d&d climate thread.

sure it gets barely a few posts a week, and commieGIR constantly probes people for “being too negative” when they’re arguing with climate change denialist, but if you want a happy hugbox one already exists, my dude.

it’s just not conducive to a discussion of real-world conditions when 94% of insect biomass is already dead and gone.

That makes sense. In contrast to that thread, it's good to have a thread like this where people can vent. You're right, and I apologize for coming off rude and lecture-y. I think I see some standout posts that don't really represent everyone's beliefs and assume those people speak for everyone in the thread. I should be more considerate in the future.

The complete fixation you have with the concept of your own actions being meaningful

You know this is the global biosphere collapse thread right? You've been posting in two threads simultaneously about how your actions are meaningful and how everyone else arguing with you is wrong

it’s okay it happens to me too. it’s easy to generalize, stereotype, or end up arguing against some nebulous lump of a thread or forum that probably isn’t representative. im trying to do better on that myself, think nothing of it. :peanut:

i'm helping kids by encouraging their parents not to have them. it's going to save them so much more trouble than you could hope to ease for them. also they are all going to die in horrific climate apocalypse imho so the coping skills are not all that relevant. not being born definitely is though that saves a lot of lives

im honestly impressed at how well capital’s investment in propaganda and education has been paying off. morons like her and the extinction rebellion folks have been chugging propaganda for so drat long, they actually believe turning themselves in and becoming martyrs is how you should affect change. a lifetime spent hearing “only nonviolent protest has ever improved things” and holding up gandhi and mlk jr. as examples of what you should aspire to be, while more inspiring figures like john brown are disgusting radicals to be reviled.

direct action gets the goods, which is why western capital has spent decades telling gullible liberals “no no no direct inaction gets the goods”, and it loving worked. :bravo:
