Nonsense. I have not yet begun to defile myself.

Honestly the best part of Downpour was that bit where the postman gives Murphy a letter saying this is for you, Murphy throws it away, postman produces another letter. "I don't think you get it, *this* is for *you*"

It was cute how you could find a recreation of The Room as an easter egg in Downpour. That and the hanging corpse that changes to a tire swing (I think? been forever) whenever you move the camera away or back were neat imo.

My big issue with Silent Hill games that aren't Silent Hill 2 is the monster design. SH3 has the best gameplay out of the original series, but 2 is the all time best monster design.

2 probably has the fewest boring designs, but the big club-armed things from 3 are the first thing I think of when I think Silent Hill. Even before Pyramid Head, tbh. Something about those big looming shapes just really stuck with me.

SH2 has the most thematically coherent design but 3 has it beat on animation and spectacle. most of 3’s critters move like they’re genuinely in agony and their SFX are the most oppressive in the series, which fits because so many of them are also downright dangerous in a way the other games never matched

The first time I saw the twin-headed monsters that walk around on their hands in Silent Hill 4 I drat near yelped. Silent Hill 4's monsters may not be thematically coherent but they're consistently off-putting in a way no other Silent Hill game quite lives up to, in my opinion.

That bit near the start of SH3 where one of the times you walk down the long hallway in the mall backrooms it just starts playing an intense horror sting like you're being chased even though there's nothing there is so good, I don't think I've ever played a series which makes actually nothing as intense as its monster encounters

They make sense thematically but tbh judged on their own as designs they're kind of underwhelming? Mostly just different variations of a shambling gray figure that isn't particularly threatening, which is fine for the regular enemies but it would have been nice if there had been a couple more intimidating threats besides pyramid head to mix it up. One of the issues I have with 2 on replay is that so much of its horror aspect is built on expectation that doesn't exactly pay off, you really need to be in the mood for the melancholy.

Crowetron

Silent Hill monster design isn't judged by being intimidating. It's judged by "what would look creepiest silhouetted against dim light at the end of the corridor" and therefore the best monster in SH2 is the Leg Mannequin.

The bedframe monster in 2 was so explicit I'm scared to think what the original concept was. There was no subtext to that thing.

The mannequin legs are good but that's kind of my point, they stand out because there's so little that isn't a pale humanoid.

I suppose you can't really separate the designs from the way they fit into the game. I like the consistency: almost all the SH2 monsters appear to be reanimated corpses or sacks of body parts. And a lot of it is the way they move: they're like wind-up toys that can only twitch and jerk and stumble and lash out. Calling them "zombies" would be too humanizing, and it makes the player feel even more alone.

SH3 and 4 have some great designs, but they're just not as downright creepy.

Oh I noticed it, and it's dumb as hell.

As for the "Maria escort mission is worse and not mentioned as often as the escort mission of 4" is because it's a super short segment compared to half the game like 4.

I honestly forgot all about the Maria escort mission bit of SH2 until it was brought up because it's such a short segment that it just doesn't stand out in my memories of the game. Stuff like descending into the prison or the apartment complex are way more burned into my memories of SH2, compared to 4 where the first half of the game was awkward and sorta weird and interesting, and then it goes full on "Hey escort mission time".

I mean, I did say in my post that SH2's escort quest isn't very long which is its sole saving grace. I just remember game overing a few times because Maria thought it would be a good idea to walk into the path of me shooting a nurse monster to death. But I've also never experienced Eileen get stuck in geometry like others have said here and I find she's pretty good about attacking monsters from the other side of where I'm attacking them, getting them stunlocked. Really the only issue I had with Eileen's AI is that sometimes she's a bit too combat happy around ghosts but you can fix that by briefly unequipping her weapon.

As for my feelings on the series as a whole...

SH1: Fantastic use of PS1 limitations to create atmosphere, the primitive graphics somehow enhance the horror and I even love the bad voice acting which adds a dreamlike quality to the game. My only real complaints about SH1 is that saving Cybil really isn't obvious until your second playthrough and even then it's a bit of a reach and some of the puzzles in the last area of the game are a bit mean.

SH2: Best story and interesting characters you can analyze for days and arrive to different conclusions of. How endings are decided is also genuinely innovative for the time. I do think it's a bit lacking in scares though, the escort segment sucks and while not a criticism of the game exactly, people really are too fixated on the sexual horror symbolism in the game than any of the other symbolism.

SH3: Best soundtrack, best environments and best protagonist. I love Heather. I love interacting with the environment in this game and hearing Heather's inner thoughts on stuff and it almost always matches my own thoughts. My biggest issue with 3 really is that some parts of the game are a bit mean. The mirror room is cool but I can imagine someone trying to get out but the door is locked and then they just die because they didn't think to try the door again once the room became dangerous. Same with the haunted manor ride which has an instant death trap which kills you on the hard difficulties but doesn't kill you on easier difficulties.

SH4: Mixed feelings. I love how it's probably the most dreamlike of the games, everything feels like a surreal nightmare. I love that it does something different and tells the story of a background serial killer you first hear about in SH2 and I love how downright weird his story is. The Water Prison is legitimately hosed up which is extra impressive given how bright that area is. I love the safe haven becoming dangerous to stay in during the second half. Unfortunately inventory management is kind of a pain and while I don't think the second half is as bad as people say it's still... not great. The new ghost victims are neat though.

Origins: I don't hate it but I don't really like it either. It's a pointless prequel telling a story which didn't need to be told intermixed with a story that's trying to be SH2 and failing. The only positives I can say really is the image of Travis in a fursuit yeeting 20 TVs he stored inside his suit at monsters is really funny. The Otherworld gimmick with mirrors is kind of neat I guess but heavily underutilized.

Homecoming: I hate this game so much. Literally the only positive I have to say about it is the bosses are kind of neat and the game is stupid enough to let you unlock the UFO ending on your first playthrough by doing really innocuous stuff. I hate everything else. It looks like poo poo, plays like poo poo, rips off SH2 and the movie in the most derivative way possible, has Pyramid Head in the game for literally no reason, the main villains want to torture people like in Hostel for no reason, the plot makes no sense because you're not really a soldier just a crazy person from a mental asylum.

Shattered Memories: Interesting concept, eh execution? I do actually like the quiet investigative sequences a lot but it's also pretty pretentious with the "this game will analyze you the player!" crap and there's no real tension because there's such a hard divide between the exploration segments and the monster segments. I do appreciate the game trying something different though and not just copying Silent Hill 2 again.

Downpour: Again interesting concept, not great execution. Being the NPC in someone else's Silent Hill is honestly pretty neat and I love how open the town is, there's a lot to explore in ways you wouldn't expect like getting into a house via a basement or by climbing fire escapes and getting in via windows and it's all optional. I love that there's a lot of little side stories about random people experiencing their own version of Silent Hill that you can interact with, whether it's solving a murder and putting the spirits of the victims to rest or uncovering the fate of an autistic girl. Unfortunately the game just isn't scary, the monster designs are generic zombies, it performs really badly (it's fine on Xbox Series X backwards compatibility but oof playing it on 360 or PS3 is rough) and it's maybe a little too... on the nose and meta about the rules of Silent Hill? For example I love the concept of DJ Ricks but he seems to know a bit too much about how Silent Hill itself works and I feel it should be kept ambiguous.

Book of Memories: Never played. I hear it's terrible but I mean, taken on its own merits and forgetting its a Silent Hill game it can't be that bad, right? It's basically a Diablo clone with moral choices after beating the boss of the area from what I've been told and I dunno, seems like it could be fun if you shut your brain off.

Arcade: Yeah I've actually played this. It's... interesting. I appreciate how it expands on some background lore in SH2 about the disappearance of the Little Baroness and the game does try to do more with its story than you'd expect from an arcade rail shooter. But it's still reusing enemies from previous games because it's cheaply made and the idea of a Silent Hill rail shooter is just inherently weird.

My only spicy Silent Hill take is that I think SH3 has a worse story than 2 but in exchange has a better everything else.

That said I will never forget marathoning SH2 on release night and being alone at a friend's house at 3 AM wired out of my loving mind on Mountain Dew and slowly descending into sobbing terror as I went through the prison

That doesn't strike me as particularly spicy. SH1 has downright painful gameplay, while SH2 is merely bad. I played the first three games in a row, and when SH3 came around it felt like taking off a straitjacket.

I had almost the same experience, two of my friends and I rented it on release, and played through the entire game that night. I remember we finished the game at about 4AM and most definitely stayed up until dawn just because the game was so compelling and we had so much to talk about, definitely not just because we were so freaked out we couldn't fall asleep until the sun was up...

I've played maybe 15 minutes of Homecoming and none of Downpour, and I'd have a hard time remembering enough about the first four games to do a real pro/cons list, but just in general SH games have more individual moments that have stuck with me than just about any other horror series. The very beginning of 1 when you wander in the alley, the whole section with Cybil later in the game... A whole slew of bits of 2, but specifically the apartment building and the prison stuck with me... 3 had the mirror room, Borley Mansion, I still think of "they look like monsters to you?" every once in a while... I don't remember a lot of 4 because I've only played it once but Walter freaked me out a lot at the time, the apartment itself was great, also there was a giant head at one point that really unnerved me.

Shattered Memories was a bad game in a lot of ways but it was one of the more interesting uses of sound design in a game like that, I think. I remember I played it with a bunch of friends one night and we were all crowded around the Wiimote to listen to the creepy phone calls you'd get throughout the game. It often wasn't all that scary of a game, but some of those moments were pretty eerie in a memorable way.

Soma has a mod that allows you to explore without dealing with the enemies other than maybe one chase sequence. You could try that especially as you are just interested in the exploration and the psychological horror.

My SH1 story is that out the back of my house were two gravel covered soccer/athletic grounds, and if there was no traffic you could hear someone crunch walking on them.
Which was nothing big, a lot of people would exercise or play there.
It was summer, dark late night, playing SH1 and had the windows open to the pitch, sound down low though so not to annoy my family.
Then a sudden scream came from outside on the pitch, and took off running away, and off into the distance. Only one pair of crunching feet.
Absolutely scared the poo poo out of me, and I had to stop playing there and then.

It was a claim that that some game dev company, the one that people kept insisting was secretly working on a new silent hill game, had plans in the works to roll with that and put out a paid demo but not actually work on any kind of finished video game. The tweet said they never planned on making a finished game and just wanted to put out a demo as part of a plan to scam investors.
