I haven't really followed this thing so far, but why do all the official images look cool as hell, and almost everyone elses not so much? Are the official guys using a more advanced version, and regular users are getting a limited trial?

I sort of am not sure because I haven't gotten to play with the realboy ones. I've also found a ton of projects that are around on google collaborations that you can run if you have enough drive space and you know what to do (I don't), and theoretically they are better and more customizable.

Secret sauce for the offical dalle2 seems to just be tossing in millions and millions of dollars of compute into training, which open source has trouble matching

With the older models' results you can 'see' the source images, like it would almost look like a distorted google image search result, very apparent with the 3d canvases where the dataset was clearly pulled from fine art printing services preview images. Dall-E-2 though is in another league. The output makes sense in terms of composition, structure, color pallette, brush stroke style etc. God drat impressive I can see myself using this as a 'rapid ideation' tool (there I just coined that term Do Not Steal) where dozens of layout and style options are spit out and then developed further into something usable in the real world. I can also see this being useful to an established artist with a very distinct style. If they can feed their own dataset of their previous work, they can then quickly spit out images in the same style

They want to avoid enabling prompts like «Obama giving a blowjob to Soros in the Oval Office» or «Trump loving his daughter» or anything involving children, which is understandable. But since they don’t know if there are ways to bypass the filters, they also filter users do they can manage it better.

Going to be not great for a lot of artist who survive off small contract gigs and what not. Hopefully lots of interesting news stuff will come from it as well, but yeah less work and less wages for certain types of artist with in 10 years for sure alas. This. Basically, tell your kids to learn to work with their hands cause we are still decades away from being able to replicate the full function range of humans hands. Concert pianist, sculpturer, painter, massage therapist. These are the jobs of the future. If you touch computers for a living without a master's degree or a PhD you are likely hosed.

You'd just tell the computer "Hey play me some upbeat R&B with a horn sound" and it would instantly create something original for you. You could go one step further and just remove the request step, so your smart home sensors just compose and play music based on what it detects your mood is and the number/type of people at your house.
