Where do you draw the line on cheating with redactle?

I gave up after 300 and googled one of the mostly-deciphered book titles. A person's name is just never something you're going to guess if you haven't heard of them before

If it looks like something I couldn't possibly know about (say, chemistry) I start searching for things in as minimal way as I can. For this one, I uncovered British, world war ii, pilot, and I know nothing about that, so I brought up a list of those and started plugging in names. The name that gave me the answer was James, followed by and the ____ ____.

If it's something I feel like I should know, I'll flail at it until way past the point where I'm having fun and should simply start cheating or put my dang phone down.

Well he sold 250 million books, I thought he was just a name that everybody knew. Mind you it took me 259 guesses for 'rope' and I definitely knew that rope existed.

I've heard of him and I knew it was an author. But holy hell, how am I supposed to narrow it down without some lucky guesses? Guess words that in the titles of books I know? He won an Edgar Award for a few short mysteries he wrote and that really led me down the wrong path. Maybe if I'd tried "Children's" or something I would have had a shot, but that wasn't on my radar at all.
