I know that Dalsnes, Norway in the prologue doesn't exist in the same place IRL, but I think that all the other locations so far seem to exist.

Yeah, this definitely feels like Thorsby ran out of steam but didn't want to abandon the project. Still, there are a few comics to go, so we'll see how it shakes out.

If you like the general feel of Thorsbys stuff, where everything is so incredibly stupid, but clever in within the given stupid framework, I'd absolutely suggest watching "Everything, Everywhere all at once". It has a similar energy and the concept is related to TDBC.

Concerned: The Half-Life and Death of Gordon Frohman

033

When you play the game and travel through this tenement, there is in fact a raid by the CP's (Civil Protection). They're looking for you (Freeman), and they beat the hell out of everyone and chase you to the roof. Frohman, of course, is as oblivious as ever and takes his sweet time getting out of there. Boy, is he stupid, folks!

Steam is the online delivery and anti-piracy client that Valve used to distribute Half-Life 2. Even people who bought the retail version of HL2 had to create a Steam account and verify their copy of the game. Valve cracked down on pirated copies, banning some 50,000 illicit accounts.

Steam has been a bit controversial, however. Many gamers complain about having to log in to Steam every time they want to play, but I personally love the system. Valve has released new content, patches, upgrades, models, and maps nearly every week since the game was released, and even provided gamers with the the wonderful surprise of an HL2 Deathmatch game.

Posing notes: Again, Frohman is the only ragdoll, the others are live, in-game characters. As the cops rushed in and the citizens started running around, I'd switch off the AI, which would freeze everyone in their tracks. Then I'd move around, get the shots I needed, and pose Frohman. Turning AI on again, everyone would come to life, and change positions, and I'd freeze them again.

034

Father Grigori is a half-mad monk you meet in the game while battling your way through Ravenholm, a town that once used to be filled with escaped citizens. When you arrive, however, the only living human is Grigori, and everyone else has been killed or turned into hideous zombies.

I'll just mention this up front: every time I have some object hovering in mid-air in front of Frohman, I get mail asking about it. Once again, when you pick up and hold objects in the game, they hover in the air in front of you (this joke began in Comics 007 and 008, and I will not let it die).

Panel 3: When you first see Grigori, he tells you to meet him in a church without actually telling you where it is. Later, he scolds you for going the wrong way. The "public teleportation" line is actually sort of true: Black Mesa East, a hidden lab with a teleporter, is nearby.

Panel 4: The "Robotic Dog" is in reference to a robotic dog (named "Dog") you meet prior to entering Ravenholm.

Panel 6: Grigori has a shotgun. And he laughs. He laughs a lot. A whole lot.

I mean yeah, the big drama was discovering the threat of nuclear war, and Ulf finally managed to solve that, we're in the denouement now.

Son of Thunderbeast
Sep 21, 2002
It kinda feels like Thorsby couldn't think of a satisfying way to start closing things out after the nuclear war > Ulf going insane as he tries to fix every problem in the world, and thought the best option to close things out would be a further escalation which would require Aisha to grow in power to be able to clash with him. imho he might've had better results with Ulf following a Charlie Gordon arc, either physically and mentally breaking down (because it was obvious to everyone that he was gonna give out one way or another on the path he was going), or maybe by reaching a point where he starts realizing that his perspective is so warped that he can't even relate to people on the most basic level, and thus can't save or even help them anymore. Something like that

But I'm still interested to see how super-Aisha handles this.

Even if TDBC ends up being a flop it had a few excellent moments, and that still puts Thorsby at a 60% hit rate for comics projects.

Son of Thunderbeast
Sep 21, 2002
oh yeah no matter how it ends it's still a great comic overall. It's just the buildup and everything up to now has been so good that the current thing is kind of a letdown, especially with all the narration going on. If I had more time I'd photoshop things so that lostclock or Aisha herself was giving the closing narration

Trixie Slaughteraxe has a somewhat similar part towards the end, where the pacing suddenly changes and the narration feels awkward, but there he manages to pull it together for a satisfying finale.
