Because the freeware stuff you run through a browser is all older and simpler? I sort of am not sure because I haven't gotten to play with the realboy ones. I've also found a ton of projects that are around on google collaborations that you can run if you have enough drive space and you know what to do (I don't), and theoretically they are better and more customizable.

Official version is screening 1000 folks a week, other people are using open source models of varying power.

Secret sauce for the offical dalle2 seems to just be tossing in millions and millions of dollars of compute into training, which open source has trouble matching

With the older models' results you can 'see' the source images, like it would almost look like a distorted google image search result, very apparent with the 3d canvases where the dataset was clearly pulled from fine art printing services preview images.

Dall-E-2 though is in another league. The output makes sense in terms of composition, structure, color pallette, brush stroke style etc. God drat impressive

I can see myself using this as a 'rapid ideation' tool (there I just coined that term Do Not Steal) where dozens of layout and style options are spit out and then developed further into something usable in the real world.

I can also see this being useful to an established artist with a very distinct style. If they can feed their own dataset of their previous work, they can then quickly spit out images in the same style

But since they don’t know if there are ways to bypass the filters, they also filter users do they can manage it better.

like, the ramifications here are kind of hilarious. if you throw enough data and processing power at it, you could absolutely do this exact thing but with, say, novels. it would just take a LOT more power, but we'll probably be there in a week. and then with another exponential jump in processing power, we can have it do games and entire films

People keep saying this but it is only true for a certain kind of art. Plenty artists paint/write/compose etc to get what they are feeling out in a physical form. Buyers also have favorite artists. Artists overall won't be obsolete, but commissioned art might have competition they didn't before

yeah no but the thing is, eventually it will be true that most artists, even the ones that say they "do it themselves", just use AI to do it, because it's infinitely quicker

we'll get to a point where you literally could type "post modern road trip novel set in an alternate 1940s France where Russia was the dominant superpower instead of America" and you could get a result that basically nobody could tell from the real thing

i'm not saying people won't still create "real" art, but the way capitalism works, expect the vast majority of extant art to be robot-made by like, 10 years from now

Yeah at some point it's gonna put stockphoto places out of business. Going to be not great for a lot of artist who survive off small contract gigs and what not. Hopefully lots of interesting news stuff will come from it as well, but yeah less work and less wages for certain types of artist with in 10 years for sure alas.

Edit: hell and just for kids who write a short story and then see it images from it come to life in front of them. Like there is a lot of really cool things that can come from this.

This. Basically, tell your kids to learn to work with their hands cause we are still decades away from being able to replicate the full function range of humans hands. Concert pianist, sculpturer, painter, massage therapist. These are the jobs of the future. If you touch computers for a living without a master's degree or a PhD you are likely hosed.

I thought this exactly, and by then it will have much greater implications in commercial art. You could do really weird poo poo with video games, like making textures unique for every player so genuinely no one has the same experience.

I think Brian Eno predicted that music would eventually end up like this. You'd just tell the computer "Hey play me some upbeat R&B with a horn sound" and it would instantly create something original for you. You could go one step further and just remove the request step, so your smart home sensors just compose and play music based on what it detects your mood is and the number/type of people at your house.
